Default Internet connection dilema

Ok I'm not sure where in this forum to post this buuuuut.

I have 2 options.
1) Have direct internet connection in my room but loose cable TV since apparently only one type can go through.
2) have Wireless internet and cable in my room.

But those are the options that I know of. Right now I am using wireless from a router in the office, but I was hoping for a direct connection since I prefer them over wireless. Then I could just put the router in my room and the comp in the office has wireless and isn't used for gaming or anything.

Is there a way to keep cable tv AND put the modem in my room without a lot of effort or is it one or the other.

IF I have to stick to wireless, what is a reliable (cheap) wireless adapter? I am always a bit fuzzy when it comes to internet.

BTW I currently have one of these to use but 1) I don't know if it supports windows 7 and 2) I don't think it was up to snuff...maybe it was just me.

Why not run a hard wire Ethernet cable from the switch ports on the router and run them to your room? If I read correctly it seems you want to do direct cable internet to a modem than to your pc, but you really should split your internet from the router or (switch) off down to Ethernet from the other room and then to your PC(s) of choice.

I have both cable TV in my room AND cable internet. You simply need a spliter.

The way I have it, I have a cable wire that comes up from the floor downstairs and directly into a 3- way split. Once the initial cable meets the spliter it then branches off into 2 seperater cables-- one that goes to my TV-- one that goes to my cable modem box (which then branches the ethernet cable to my PC).

Give me a bit and I will take a picture of it and post it for you.

EDIT: 'Kay. here are the pictures I promised.

See, that right there. That's what I want to do! For some reason the calbe provider guy said one one type of signal is sent at time, ether cable or internet. I thought he was hi or something since I was pretty sure the modem enabled internet and it didn't matter which cable plug it came out of.

But If I can split it just like that, then its all good.

lol. Wow... Yea... The tech you spoke to was definately bad. That or too lazy to do some manual labor in setting the cables up for you. It's honestly very easy for them to install. I did it myself since I had the tools and I know a bit about cables ect ect.

Well. This right here is your best solution and will provide a win-win scenario for both TV and Internet.

Yep... A lot of people don't give a damn for their job. They only care for their paycheck and that is what breeds bad employees.

When I first got cable internet, they ran a separate line to the modem which had (or maybe the other line had) a filter in it to reduce interference. Since then though, somewhere along the way to getting digital cable, I notice that the separate filter has disappeared. It could be though that your ISP's system uses some filtering.
However, I don't see any reason why any filtering couldn't be done after the line enters your room. Perhaps the installer was not quite aware that you wanted to move the cable modem, not add a second one.
In any case it shouldn't hurt to try simply using a splitter like JonnieBoi says. If you get interference you can try getting a filter from the cable company.

Btw, normally a wireless connection to the modem should be fine with GW. I think there are many people on here who connect wirelessly. They could give you a better answer, but I don't think there are any special latency (lag) issues using wireless, although there can be issues with signal strength and routers "looking for better signals".

Well I just moved the modem and router to my room. GW lags a lot less now, download speed has increased, etc etc. I had a pretty crappy wireless adapter card, but the one that came with the desktop in the office is pretty awesome so every computer in the house is now happy!

I still need to buy a splitter tomorrow, I wont have TV or Internet tonight (depending on which I want lol) but I can last that long at least.
