Just thought I would clear this up.

Low FPS is not lag. Lag is latency which is the time taken for a data packet to be sent to the "other end".

FPS is how many frames appear on your screen per second (as the name implies).

Lag is internet related, FPS is hardware (and sometimes software as shown by your case) related.

Ok, the reason I wont go to windows is because I have gotten viruses (even by ONLY installing things that are from CD and not downloading anything.) and it crashed my computer. The games I get perfectly running are...
Tremulous
Alien Arena (Native)
Rohan Blood Feud
Perfect World International
and more...

I have an AGP slot (I think) so do you have a recommended video card for that? Thanks for all the replies! Im sticking with Ubuntu though.

i personally think you are lying, unless you are installing from nonlegitimate CDs, or know nothing about basic computer security. windows, and especially windows vista and 7, are both very secure. with proper precautions in place, it's almost impossible to get a virus unless the user installs it him/herself.

buying a new graphic card is only going to help so much. running GW with an emulator is a very hit or miss deal, and you will NEVER get full performance out of your hardware.

Shoot, with a good firewall and antivirus Windows XP can be very secure.

A Radeon X1650 Pro 512MB Agp, (you can get one for about $60 from Amazon), is the card I was using in my old computer and still runs Guild Wars very nicely. Since you are running it with an emulator there is no telling if this will improve GWs for you or not.

Well first why would I have a reason to lie? What good would that do for me? Second I know several people who get virus on computer that they can only access the Internet from (Such as a school laptop) You can easily get infected from MySpace, Facebook, Flash game websites or websites that just want to store "information" on your computer. I know I cant get the full performance going through WINE ([W]ine [I]s [N]ot an [E]mulator) because its a whole new layer. So that is what I have to say. I just want a way to get more FPS by doing something across all OS. (Such as defragging or something like that its called)

Unless your technologically incompetent, it's very difficult to get a virus on windows. Heck, I went for 3 months without an anti-virus on my laptop. I got no viruses, and I regularly used these websites that you seem to think are dodgy.

Ok i know alot of replies should have helped but may i ask what processor your also running because from the looks of it your best option would be to get a new pc if your running a pci graphics card your options are very limited

Another point if you do have an agp slot getting a new graphics card wont do moot for you well it will but not much if its an older cpu your running also as has been suggested using linux based OS's can work with gw but can also be very temperamental and tend to not be run with older systems.

and last point windows does have its security issues but ever since xp i have had no problem with windows if you know how to make sure your pc is secure
and the only reason linux is better is cause the hackers/virus makers dont tend to make viruses for linux cause it doesnt give them as good if any reward for it since there is a good few people less using linux than there is windows :P anyways sorry for a mini wall just in from work hope it helps.

if you could let us know the full system specs of the pc it would help alot
on us helping you out full specs would be, what cpu be it amd or intel and its name ie pentium 3 or 4 or amd athlon/64 and its mhz/ghz its running at, the amount of ram you have be it 64mb-8gb whichever :P we know your gpu and operating system and i wish you good luck at getting it sorted

Bwathke - I am sorry to say this, but you need to believe the above posters who say that Guild Wars does not work well on Linux. It's just a sad fact. Some games work fine on Linux, but most "mainstream" games do not work well with Linux/Ubuntu.

You have no need to fear Windows, I know that Ubuntu has some benefits, but if you can afford $85-100 you should buy a legit. copy of Windows (I suggest Xp for your current computer, Win 7 is very very nice, but it might be a drag on your current hardware) and then do your gaming on Windows. It's just better, mainly for the fact that the vast majority of games are made for Windows.

You may or may not be interested, but if you want to check out a MMORPG that was designed with Linux in mind (also works on OSX and Windows) check out Regnum Online. It's PVP oriented once you reach higher levels, but it's a fun game and free.

I believe that Windows is MUCH better for gaming but I have had to many bad experiences with it. I have a legit copy of XP (Possibly Vista but there is NO chance Im installing that) I just noticed something... I booted up PWI because I haven't played it for awhile. I started playing and my FPS dropped down to where GW was at... So Im starting to suspect something happened in the time period that I was not playing. I reset my computer and I took the top off of it (In case it was overheating) I saw the fan was blowing directly into a big sheet of metal therefore not cooling it at all. My PC dosent have the best processor but its still pretty fast (Boots up native things in a heartbeat) Im using a full-height video card in a half height holder so I had to manipulate the top and Im thinking I might have overheated my computer... If I did I will feel really really dumb and Im sorry if all this wasted your time Thanks for all the replies I will tell you my results.

Results~
9-11 FPS in LA
12-17 FPS in the outside world

Notes~
My computer was overheating........ Im so sorry for wasting your time I cant believe it took me a week to even find that...
