Default Hmmm. I like Pix.

so the question is...

dime for dollar, which/who/what takes the best images.

I'm no Rockefeller, Bohemian, Bilderberg, not gonna capture monies and counterfeit.

Hmmm...figure like, what $300 usd?

I have a Nikon, but it's like. old. (the film is in the icebox)

so that leaves us with...3oo. help. and no. no printers, all digital. ty.

When it comes to DSLR cameras, out of my collection, I'm personally in love with my D40x. Won't score one for as low as $300 unless you get lucky and find one used that isn't somehow defective or otherwise not worth purchasing (though you can easily find them from $400-$500 or so), but it's an excellent camera.

Canon and Nikon are pretty much the best of the bunch in the DSLR category. However, at only 300 USD as top of the budget, you will be hard pressed to get a DSLR (and as Faer pointed out, if you do find one, it most likely won't be in good condition).

Your best bet is to get a point and shoot. In that catagory, Panasonic, Olympus, Casio, and Sony make great models (Sony has Zeiss on their side, but their image technology is the worst of the bunch, so it is a give/take)

^ Is a really nice point and shoot with excellent reviews on many sites.

Tons of people have recommended the above linked camera to me, so I bought it. Eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Are you actually looking for a DSLR? If so, $300 is not going to cut it.... Canon and Nikon are widely considered the top of the line for that market.

What do you really need the camera for? Don't go and buy one with tons of features that you will never ever use and may not even know what are. So many ppl buy a camera with 35 bells and whistles and they never take it off "Easy" mode. lol
My personal recommendation (unless you are using it professionally), is to not worry about the MegaPixels (anything over 6 is overkill) and spend the money on a good optical zoom, image stabilization and a quality lens... next to that is a good clear LCD and the rest is just frills for the most part.

The best thing to do if you're not sure is read lots and lots of reviews, both by the pros and the Joe Sixpacks out there.... get an idea of what the general public thinks about the camera that they own and use before you go and buy it. :d
