Default My power supply is dying

I think I've narrowed down my problem to the power supply in my computer. It clicks when I press the button but won't start, unless I pop it open and unplug my extra case fan. Then it'll start, and once its running I can plug my fan back in. This problem only started a couple days ago, I've had the fan for over a year.

So while I've built computers before from parts, I've never actually put in a power supply (I usually just get the case with the power supply in it) How hard is it to do? My case is from a gateway, about 4-5 years old. Appears to be a standard power supply. I can't afford a totally new computer, is it worthwhile to buy a replacement part and put it in, or should I just nurse it along until I can afford a whole new case/motherboard (many of the parts in this machine are newer and I could transfer them to the new comp) Any advice?

installing a power supply is pretty easy. just plug everything into the right spot and its good to go. if you can assemble a computer, then installing a power supply should be no trouble for you.

A Power Supply install is just a matter of 4 or 5 screws in the back of the case.... take them out, and put the new PSU back in it's place, connecting all the cables is just like it would be if you bought a case with a PSU in place already. The only real additional "danger" involved is dropping that blunt heavy object on your toes when you take it out. lol
