Start off by giving us the details of your motherboard
( The easiest thing would just find the box and look it up there, or screw open your case and look for a sticker with the model number etc. )

If that doesn't work, and you do have internet here I see, download this little program, unzip it, open it and check the 'Mainbord' tab, it says the model number and stuff there too. ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php )

go to device manager and see if you have any yellow exclamation points.... that would indicate if you have a messed up or missing driver.

Do you connect via a USB modem? If so reinstall the software sent to you by your ISP.

I restored a friends computer to factory condition and she lost her internet. She reinstalled the modem drivers and is oK now.

windows XP does not come with many of the drivers necessary for a computer to run flawlessly out of the box. unfortunately, you'll have to go hunt them down yourself. if you have a second computer, just search using google with your computer's model name.
