Angry Radeon X1950 Pro PCI-E keeps causing Bluescreen on Windows 7 Ultimate - Help!

Hello,

I hope you all may be able to help me out.

To make a long story short Guild Wars use to run fine under Windows XP Pro SP3, since installing Windows 7 Ultimate Release not beta Guild Wars will crash completely at randomintervals. It could be 3 mins between BSoD's or 3 hours, there is no knowing when it will happen.

I'm not sure why this is happening to be honest.

Hate doesn't appear to be an issue, I'm not overclocking the hard and I'm using the latest available graphics card drivers from the ATI website.

In Guild Wars the sound goes completely nuts (looping quickly) before throwing up the Bluescreen of death and then automatically rebooting.

Other times when running games such as flash games on the Internet the PC simply restarts without any warning.

Sometimes I need to turn the power off because it won't come back up.

Its pretty annoying as I can figure out why it could be happening.

My PC specs are as follows:

I'm more then happy to provide additional information or do anything to stop this damn issue, not going to be much fun if it keeps crashing on me.

I haven't installed anything strange as of late, I believe the issue has been here since day one of installing Windows 7.

Trying to use the game in Windows XP SP3 compatiblity doesn't appear to help.

It still causes regardless

Not familiar with Windows 7 yet. Does it have an XP emulator like Vista did?

Check out this website on program compatability. Maybe Windows 7 has a similar capability to run a program in compatability mode of an older OS.

http://filext.com/faq/run_old_program_xp.php

Nevermind, I didnt see you already tried that. The post was a little cumbersome to pick through.

could you post the error message on the BSOD?

if it's a driver issue it may help to delete the drivers, use driver sweeper in safe mode and then install the newest Win7 compatible drivers from ATI. (which you would have previously downloaded to your computer).

Ironicly, my video card, the exact same card as you (X1950 Pro) stopped working after a windows XP update about a week ago.

unfortunately, AMD has put your card on legacy support. i believe the last supported driver for it, is version 8.11. i can't remember the exact version number though.

give the older driver versions a try, and see if it fixes it or not.

Sounds like some reinstallation of drivers are needed, best of luck.

When the error happens next I'll very quickly note it down and then post it here if I get it.

I'll try the suggest below first, failing that I'll uninstall the hardware in Safemode, then use driver sweeper

Well I tired Windows XP SP3, so I guess trying Vista SP2 couldn't hurt. Did you have to change any of the other settings? Like run as admin?

If the above doesn't work, I'll try what Elder III. Most likely the drivers have gone to crap, but you never know.

8.11 wasn't the last they made available, last was: 9.8.

Saying that maybe it would be worth rolling back to an older driver like 8.11

Does anyone know which Catalyst drivers were fairly stable? My PC is pretty good anyhow so I don't mind using older drivers if need be.

I was thinking these may do the trick: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...?&lang=English

Have you tried opening the GW execute properties and disabling the desktop composition? Also try run as admin . Had sorta the same issue and this fixed it .

Do you have any other games you can play to see if they cause the system to crash,

GW is an older game now, would the DX11 be causing issues, with it,

Also someone said his card is now on legacy support, would the drivers for it even work in Windows 7....

Like, Elder III said, you need to post what the BSOD is actually saying.

Other games don't appear to be crashing, and the while the card is "legacy" its not over the hill. The drivers it makes use of are Vista 32bit drivers as there are no 'official' Windows 7 drivers provided by ATI.

Windows 7 happily uses Vista drivers however.

I've tired running it in Vista SP2, no dice. I've run the Windows 7 memory checker, no errors found.

I've used driver sweeper and allowed Windows 7 to download drivers for my card which is currently version: 8.56.1.15

Finally the error in question is: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

I've also gotten a page_fault_in_nonpaged_area error once or twice.

I've downloaded memtest86 to see if the issue is with my memory.

On that note I did pop the side off my rig and found one of the memory sticks to not be pushed down 100% (Only ever do slightly).

I'll see what memtest says first, could be a faulty RAM stick as it doesn't happen ALL the time.

Will update you all shortly.

Bit of an update. Since memtest did in fact lock up the whole PC during operation, all signs point to a faulty RAM stick. I have removed one of them to see.

So far so good, the PC is running a bit sluggish with only 1GB but no Bluescreen crashes as of yet.

It could be the stick is faulty or the configuration used on the board is wrong - the positions of the sticks that is.

faulty memory is likely. windows 7 does use more resources than XP (despite what everyone's been saying, windows 7 will use just as much resources as vista), and that additional load might be utilizing the bad section of your RAM stick that XP didn't.

however, the RAM configuration is unlikely to cause the problem. at worst, you're running the sticks in single channel mode instead of dual channel, which amounts to lower performance only. that shouldn't actually cause errors though.

Appears removing the faulty RAM stick (Not sure if it is or not) and updating the firmware of the motherboard has fixed the issue.

Hopefully I shouldn't have any further issues, I do now need to replace the RAM stick as I'm down to 1GB now.

Also plan to replace the stock cooler on my graphics card with a better one, a more silent one for a start as the stick cooler is noisy as hell.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.
