Default 24" wide vs 19" 4:3

I was wondering if anyone has had experience switching from normal 19" to wide 24"? How much more "screening space" will i actually get? A friend of mine said that because bigger one is wide, i won`t get much more vertical space. I currently own a 19" Samsung, but i got my eyes on Benq 24" G2420HD. What do you guys think? Price is not a matter of concern, and i would use it primarily for gaming and movies on this rig.

I moved from an 18" Square screen to a 23" Wide. I love it, it's especially good for games that have a lot of things on the screen, or programs that feature many panels such as photoshop. If you plan on watching movies, they always look better on a bigger screen.

The amount of vertical space your gain is small, but the horizontal space gain is great.

I'm not sure what the pricing of Monitors is like wherever you are located, but here its better value for money to go for a 23". A 23" usually costs under $350NZ, whereas a 24" will set you back $450+. The market for Tech products is probably more stable if you are in Europe or US, so it shouldn't be an issue. But it's still something to keep in mind.

I moved from 19" wide to 22" wide and that was perfect. I tried 24" as well but I found it uncomfortably big so I switched to the 22". You won't miss the vertical space, considering your eyes ( probably ) are next to each other and not above.

lol actually my third eye in the middle of my forehead will need extra vertical space

Seriously, price for this Benq is around 177 euros, so it`s not much of an issue. Reviews say that this particular model is very cheap for it`s class, yet it has very good characteristics.

I have a regular 19 inch and a 22 inch widescreen side by side to play 2 GW accounts at the same time. They have both the same height and I love the setup. And yes, the widescreen is so much nicer. So if you are considering upgrading (to a 22 or 24 inch) I'd say take either one but keep both monitors connected. You can direct Windows to see them as one big desktop.

And then get a second GW account (very cheap now) and then welcome to the wonderful world of 6 heroes...

Of course your graphics card needs to be able to handle two monitors (2 video outputs) and it needs to be powerful enough to run the high resolution of 2 monitors.

not much to say. you will notice a size difference. can't vouch for Benq. I bought an Asus vw266h in november. it's nice but it's starting to bleed, and no drivers. it sucks having a nice big expensive monitor that shows up as a generic pnp because it's using microsoft's drivers. Asus fails on that one. Oh yeah. the stand/base it came with ....cheap plastic garbage... wobbled at the slightest touch. bought a $100 vesa mount.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/BenQ-G2420HD.../dp/B002M1FH2Q <----£173.28 + £5.99 shipping at amazon.co.uk (the Benq you're looking at)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkm95QZnMpo Some kid opening one up. might give you an idea of size.

/edit
after watching that video, it looks like the base/stand is the same garbage as well, also it looks like Amazon HAD it in stock for £157.43.

Thanks flubber, those links are nice, although amazon is outrageously expensive. I plan to mount it on the wall, so stand is not that important. No HDMI cable that goes in the package grr..

I owned a BenQ 20" monitor for awhile and I was very pleased with the quality of it, both sturdiness and for viewing pleasure. I would buy them again without hesitation if the price was right. 24" will give you way more Field of View for playing games and will look much better too. Not to mention widescreen movies.........

it comes down to the native resolution of the monitors.

most 19" monitors have a 1280x1024 resolution. the benq your looking at has a native resolution of 1920x1080.

im running a 19'' dell monitor at 1280x1024 on my desktop and have a laptop in 1920x1200. i can tell you this, there is a very huge difference in desktop size. the 1920x1200 is almost double the size in comparison.

for a comparison look at the image i posted below.

720p is 1280x720 resolution.

1080p is 1920x1080 resolution.

hope this helps.

You get essentially no additional vertical space, but you'll get a pretty nice amount of space on the side. I can pretty much make my windows a bit wider, have vent open on the side, and still keep my windows sidebar revealed.

I bought a Samsung SyncMaster 24" 1920x1200 a couple months ago to upgrade from my 17" fullscreen, and it's amazing. Takes about 2-3 days to fully adjust to the size, but is perfect for multitasking! You can see two full pages in Microsoft Word, etc.

Gaming is just plain awesome. Guild Wars, Team Fortress 2, and Starcraft (lolz) are just plain gorgeous.

Semi related to this, but when picking out a screen what advice can you give? I've gotta buy a new screen soon and apparently you can't really tell someone over the internet what good monitors are, you have to see them yourself.

pick one with a native resolution your comfortable with, and one that your video card can handle.*unless u plan on upgrading it soon too*

for instance. my laptop has a 17"screen with 1920x1200 resolution. i love it, but things were a bit small and took some getting used to.

on top of that, imagine a mobile graphix card pushing guildwars at 1920x1200

I went from an old 19" to a 28" WS. GW looks a lot better. Flight Simulator is much better. And as someone else mentioned movies look like they belong on it now. Just gotta get a blue ray dvd drive now.

Obscene difference. Even 22" to 24" is big.
