Avast sucks IMO. There's nothing better than playing Wolfenstein: ET and having the popup in the middle of a shootout.

Maybe they changed it last time I used it. I still remember shouts (in my native language, of course) "THE VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED!" that would cause my games to lag and/or minimize.

You can disable that in the options.

I like Avast. I installed it on my PC and my sisters' and mother's laptops because they're too computer illiterate to do that stuff themselves. It's free, reliable and doesn't hog your CPU, RAM nor HDD.

I think some of the personal-use commercial anti-virus programs are overpriced.

I also run avast, and while I do get the update thing popping up, I have never had it lag out a game, or create any other issue. I personally like the fact that it does update as much as it does, gives me this nice secure feeling that they are actually doing something, rather than just a weekly update (which leaves your computer vulnerable for 6.5 days after it installs).

Sound is the least annoying thing.

In some games, you might accidentally click the pop-up and it minimizes the game. which IS annoying.

NOD32 is a lot better, IMO.

Again, just disable those short popups that briefly appear in the lower right.

Go to Settings > Update (Basic) and make it all Silent under Details.

Microsoft Essentials is ok but the scan is just way to slow but atleast its free but still requires you have a legal version of XP, Vista or Windows 7.

You have to update it manually with new definitions which kinda sucks correct me if im wrong but its the only 2 bad things at the moment.

But its free just those two flaws which might not be the best but there arent much free alternatives.

Edit: Forgot to mention its really easy to understand so good layout so its not hard for a beginner once they installed it.

The best anti-malware and virus detection program is, or rather should, be running in your brain. Don't ever run cracks, hacks, keygenerators and whatmore. Simply using your brain isn't good enough. Even first-party software from reputable vendors can contain viruses (a recent example is Razer), and widely-used software like Adobe Flash/Acrobat and Sun Java regularly exhibit new vulnerabilities. It's true that malware generally targets (and hits) the low-hanging fruit, but you're kidding yourself if you think being a non-moron makes you bulletproof.

One AV vendor that inexplicably never seems to get mentioned is G-Data; they've consistently scored the highest detection rates on AV comparatives. Their software isn't the fastest, most convenient, or least intrusive, but detection rate is the metric that trumps all others when it comes to antivirus.

For the paranoid, even better security options are to run everything inside of sandboxes/VMs, or booting from read-only media.

Things such as Razer, Adobe Acrobat/Flash, Sun Java, etc. are not "first party" they are third party software. These vendors do not distribute viruses. If their software is ever flagged, it's called a False Positive. A good example of such is AVG flagging user32.dll as "PSW.banker4.APSA" which you can read about here.

And using your brain works quite well.
