Don't worry, they'll fix it eventually, but you can still play in the meanwhile.

Looks like this issue happens when Anet/NCSoft bans entire subnets, they probably whitelist individual IP addresses only after the ban has occurred, but this way a lot of people are involved...

Default Connecting to ArenaNet 0%

Hi,
I've been unable to play GW since Dragon Festival started. I'm always stuck at "Connecting to ArenaNet 0%". I also found out that sites www.guildwars.com , www.arena.net , www.wiki.guildwars.com aren't working since then. After -diag mode I got:

================================================== ============================
= Checking server connectivity
================================================== ============================
Diag.ArenaNetworks.com - address lookup failed
File1.ArenaNetworks.com - address lookup failed
Auth1.ArenaNetworks.com - address lookup failed
Completed in 30.00 seconds

================================================== ============================
= Tracing network paths
================================================== ============================
icmp.arenanetworks.com - address lookup failed
Completed in 10.00 seconds

================================================== ============================

Does anyone know how to fix this? Should I contact my Internet provider? I must assure you that it's not firewall problem.
Please, help me.
Regards.

edit:

This Google Public DNS thing is pro, it also seems to have improved my connection speed!
Is there any reason not to use it all the time?

There were some posts about this a while ago in which it was suggested that some ISPs and school/business networks had disabled GW because their system thought GW was a file sharing program.
There's also been cases where ANet blocked a range of IPs that botters/gold-farmers used and some innocent people were in the same range.
Since nobody posting here seems to want to mention where they are and/or what provider they are using, it's harder to pin it down.

I will be notifying Arena Net of this thread. Keep your eyes out for an official response.

As said, I sought an official response from ArenaNet. Here you have said response from the top tier of support.

If their ISP is unable to refresh their DNS server you may want to continue to suggest using the Google DNS server temporarily until it is resolved: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ *This is not supported by NCsoft in any manner.

The root cause of the issue is those ISPs around that world that have long delays to refresh their DNS information. The forum thread you posted is not loading at this time, but I have not seen any reports of the Google DNS not working if it is setup correctly. If there are people that can not connect after using the new DNS information then they likely have a different issue - like a firewall block.

Thanks,

The last 4 to 5 hours I can't connect to the GW server, due to "code 058".
Although it happened before, resetting router and/or restarting computer fixed this. But not this time
I could try port forwarding but what's the IP of GW's server?
My location: Netherlands
My ISP: Telfort
Thanks

Did you try to use the Google Public DNS?

No I didn't.
I did however opened port 6112 in my router, to no avail.
So I decided to follow your suggestion.
Having WinXP I went to LAN properties, then changed the settings in the Internet-protocol (TCP/IP) box.
So now I have in that box as Preferred DNS server and as Alternate DNS server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively.
The testing seemed to be OK.
Still I can't connect to GW's server.
"Using Google Public DNS" also mentions changing the DNS settings in my router.
But I'm somewhat reluctant to do that.
Besides, from September 2009 up until today I had no problem with the settings as they were. I was playing this afternoon and wanted to change character when I got this 058 code.
Any other ideas?
Very much appreciated.

UPDATE fyi

I mailed my GW friend and he found this in wiki:

Its not mentioned here, but error 58 is also shown when the gw.dat file is corrupted (although it still blames it on network error).
If you delete or rename the gw.dat file and force guildwars to download it fresh, the problem goes away.Sadie2k 23:01, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Before renaming the gw.dat file I reverted all the changes I'd made back to its previous state.
Guess what ..... gw.dat appeared to be the culprit, that is to say in my case. So it's working fine now.
