The graphics do not get significantly more flashy. There are a few skills with specific graphical effects but they're definitely not enough to cause trouble if your machine can run GW. GW was designed without big flashy effects so that as many people as possible could play it without needing high end computers.

If the anti-aliasing settings only have "None", then your graphics drivers are not reporting that they support AA. Do you have Intel graphics? Or are you running under Wine? If you're using Wine, you can force AA through the drivers.

Plus you're playing around the Prophecies area, which hasn't been upgraded since 2005. The beginning areas will seem all of the same colour.

This game is beautiful and it will take a while for you to see some of the great designs that have gone into it.

But yes, an integrated graphics card won't support AA.

The game does not look significantly better until Nightfall imo.... and of course Eye of the North has much better graphics. I wouldn't worry about it though, because if it was much better looking your computer would have a hard time running it.

Missed that - thanks.

The GPU power required doesn't change significantly for any part of the game - you can play (albeit at around 15FPS on low settings) using GMA950 for the entire game. The HD4550 (~$30) in my server can play the entire game at 60FPS with high settings and 4xAA.

IMO GW is easily the best-looking MMO around (and has a decidely non-clunky feel to it) even at low settings. You really should give it a go on a machine with AA though - even 2xAA makes a big difference, and 4xAA (edge-detect or CSAA) is beautiful.

One option to maybe give a pseudo-AA effect with Intel graphics (if your machine supports it) is to use a lower-than-native resolution with the same aspect ratio and allow the graphics card to scale up. This also would allow higher performance. However, you won't be able to manage it on most machines (you'd need a custom resolution) and it will look somewhat blurry.

The CPU power available affects performance in busy outposts. The more people present, the lower the performance (esp. when displaying their names).

Speaking of which, I'd advise getting to Lion's Arch by Halloween

Anet have stated that they're testing GW2 on machines 3-4 years old, so it should scale down well and still look and play OK. I expect from the media released though that if you've got the grunt it will scale up to be absolutely gorgeous.

It's definitely still worthwhile to buy GW - GW2 won't be out for a while, and there's lots of gameplay in GW (I was bit slow, but didn't finally finish EotN until 3 years after I first got Prophecies). You will have problems getting parties together in many areas, but the game is designed to be completable with just henchmen (and heroes in Nightfall/EotN) though it can be very hard in places. I would strongly advise that when you get to Lion's Arch you go to both Nightfall and EotN to get the initial heroes - they will make playing considerably more enjoyable when you can't get a party together.

You will have to lower the settings to play in NF & EoTN, there are some areas in both games/campaigns that do not do well at all with most Intel integrated graphics. Any integrated graphics stink for gaming and Intel tends to be even worse than some others. :/ I used to play GW with an Intel GM 8245 and it was playable but I had to do lots of tweaks and work arounds to even enter some of the later areas in NF (EoTN didn't exist yet). But as far as playing through Prophecies goes, you should be fine with your current laptop.

Good news though! Intel's Sandy Bridge CPU will be able to play Guild Wars 1 on very acceptable settings at nice framerates. It makes me happy.

But yeh, you'll need to turn settings way down to play EotN. Look for the Complete Collection that Marty described above.
