Default Audio Issues

So the game is strange on my desktop. I can hear a few of the sounds, but I also can't hear a good number of them. Also, combat I can only hear if I turn the camera to the side of my character, unless it's faraway combat which I can hear almost anywhere.

I'm on Windows 7, and I can't figure the problem out.

There is not enough information to be of assistance. What sound card, are the drivers properly installed? If you are using a creative card, did you install Alchemy?

Your sound card is outputting surround but you have just a single pair of speakers hooked up. These speakers are playing the SURROUND (back) and not the front channels.

In the control panel, click sound, find the "speakers" entry for your sound card, click configure and select stereo. You may also need to change which jack you connected your speakers to on the soundcard.

Usually, it's the green jack for the main front speakers. But some cards let you change things around - so, if the speakers are in the green jack, make sure the green jack is set to "front" or "main" speakers.
Also, if you only have 2 speakers (or 2.1 - 2 speakers plus a subwoofer), make sure your audio setup is set to stereo or 2.1 (and not 5.1, for example)
