Default Setting up ventrillo for myself and friend!

I have no idea what to do here. I have downloaded the vent client and server programs. I have created myself (an account) and a server admin for myself. I have two IP addresses, one internal (one I shouldnt use, right?) and an external one).

I also have a headset with microphone

How do I set up everything so my friend can listen to me through vent?

Did you ever consider using Skype? It's usually better quality and easier to set up.
As for Ventrilo: I have no clue how to set it up.

Ventrillo works pretty well or used to I haven't had a need to use it for nearly a year.

There is a setup guide online that I followed.

http://www.ventrilo.com/tutorial.php

There are others online but the one above is pretty clear.

Essentially one person needs the server program and the client that person sets up the server on his computer and allows the others who use his IP address and password to access the server.

Note you need to run the client program and join your own server.

We used it in team games rather than Skype because we could set up several channels.
We all began on channel 1 Base then each team left to go to red and blue channels so teams couldn't overhear the other team.

Worked very well for our group.

You would give out your external IP address, but you yourself will connect via the internal IP address.

You also may need to set upi a port forwarding rule in your router so the router forwards the external requests through to your Vent server.

I can't tell from your OP if you actually are running the Ventrilo server on a different computer - I don't think you can run the server and the client on the same machine. In my case I have an old Athlon based computer with no sound and 2D graphics which runs Ventrilo. You need to forward the appropriate port to the Vent server in your router.
Your friends need to use your external IP to connect to the Vent server while you will use your internal IP. It's best to set the Vent server to a static IP so you don't have to change the port forwarding any time the Vent server grabs a different IP from the router.

Thank you for your responses so far but I have some questions

I have created my own account.
I have found internal/external IP addresses

Where do you find a port number?

You are suggesting I create a server with my external IP, port and pass, give it to a friend and then he can connect? And I dot know any router stuff or static IP so I still need some help!

You can runn the Vent Server & Client on the same PC. I curerntly do so. You just need to remember to connect to the vent server via your internal IP address. Everyone else connects via the external.

The free version of Vent has a fixed port number of 3784 so you just need to make sure that you forward that port in your router to the correct internal IP address.

Ok, I'll put 3784 as the port. I also understand the IP issue. But how do I "forward that port in your router to the correct internal ip address"? I don't know what a router is

Your router will most likely be your DSL or cable modem.

You can look up your DSL or Cable modem on the below website to find instructions on how to set up port forwarding on your router/cable modem.

Hope this helps

I myself would use an Internet provider to do this.
We pay about $70.00 a year to host 25 people. I’m not really into doing the math right now but I’m sure it’s just under a dollar week. Vent. Sucks the resources out of your computer. I’ve had many a player who can play the game but they can’t run vent at the same time. Depending on how many people you’re hosting, depends on the load on your personal computer. And you also have to have the band with to match such a load.

If this is just for five to ten people I would definitely getting contact with these guys they’ve been very good at backing up everything they do. That’s 40 a year divided by 10 is $4 dollars a year from each player with the ability to grow in size.

If you are wondering why my prices are a little bit different than what I quote you that’s because I run a complete package of running a first person shooter .

OP Seems to suggest its just for him and a friend.

I've hosted upto 8 people on my PC while playing and never noticed a resource drain.

Ditch Vent.

Mumble is FTW. It's open source, free to use.
