Default Rename the Guild Wars Folder

Hi,

Im new here. I have a question about renaming the Guild Wars folder in

C:\Program Files(x86)\Guild Wars\

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Can I rename this folder and it's contents? Like Guild Wars.exe, Gw.exe, Gw.dat, and Gw.tmp

Will it corrupt the folder or anything?

Thanks

I really can't think of any reaon why you would want to do that. But i have some experience with modding and the most of the time the .exe file which loads the game can't find it's other components, especially if you chance the name after the dot, the file extension. But yiu can always try, if it doesn't work just chance the name back

However the file name .exe file is changable, if you don't want to get caught for gaming you could change it to word.exe or something, and then change the helmet image of the exe file to the image word is using. Only the desktopshortcut won't work anymore this way.

If you really want to change the other file names you need to change them to in the exe file. you need to know things about programming but that is hard to learn in a short amouth of time

If you would like to hide the file and you have time wait some time for it you can put them in a zip file and put a password on it. Search will only find a zip file this way but who searches can't acses the file

You can to instal the files somewhere in a system map when installing the game, the searchegine shoud be able to find them this way.

If you have money to pay from it you can run gw from an usb stick or an portable harddrive and then change the exe file name so it can't be found in history.

So, i think i have said enough posibilities for it

I remember one called Reshack or something thats safe, but id look up what it does etc and be sure you know what your doing first. My college (uk college) wouldnt let us use firefox so i come up with the genious idea of having one called internet explorer..therefore they couldnt block it

If your planning on running this at a workplace, im pretty sure A: the firewall may be a problem, B: theres alot of ways you'd probs get caught sooner or later, playing games C: You are getting paid to work, work

This is combined with the memory stick idea too, I am not responsible for any problems that are caused either should there be any. Just to let you know, if your planning on running multiple copies of guild wars or soemtihng, theres many simpler ideas and legal programs that you can use.

Ok - gw sets in registry the location of the gw folder.
renaming gw.exe or other files in the folder will basically stop the game working as it has no way of knowing what the files are.
If you rename the gw folder only - say gwgame then run from within it gw.exe then you will get a warning notice about the gw.exe being in a diff folder and do you want to use this folder ( it updates the registrys gw info ).
I kno this works on xp and for last 3 yrs ive never re-installed gw but copied the folder over from a backup ( saves ages reloading files ) and its always gave the warning message an question and after its set - it runs from anywhere - even ran gw from a J: drive

So when I run the Client Setup and it asks me what folder I want to install it to, I select my FlashDrive?

yes exactly, just one thing, make sure your usb/pendrive is 3 gigabytes or more, or the game won't fit on it

but there are some computers where this doesn't work, they have a blok from exe files being used from usb/pendrives like at my school

what id personally do - if you have gw already on your pc .. copy the gw folder and its contents ( screenshots optional but templates is a must ) onto the flashdrive. There isnt really any need for installation as ive only ever installed gw once and ive had maybe 5 or 6 system reinstalls and all just readded the gw folder.
The only downside i see to what you want to do is this - the registry settings for gw will be added to each pc and wont be kept on the pendrive - so if you try this on a firends pc who has gw already installed theres a chance it will either use his settings or over write them.

I did read somewhere before that running gw from a pendrive is its a lot slower loading etc and will be on avg 4 gig in size regardless ( 4gig is the rough size of the gw.dat file which is what acts as a cache file )

you mean like it'll overwrite graphic settings and game layout?

what i mean is if friend has gw already you will basically remove his settings - if you mate already has gw then installing a pendrive copy isnt worth it - just log into his and make sure log in details are not remembered.

You have to remember your settings are actually saved in gw.dat but any registry settings ( gw folder path ) are stored in system registry on the machine its installed ( or ran ) on.
Tbh i got a feeling ( thinking of gw multi etc ) even if you ran gw,exe from pendrive it may actually use the dat file from the system if already installed.
