Default Running GW in virtualbox

Is anyone running GW in a Windows virtual machine using Virtualbox on an Ubuntu host? I'm considering switching my laptop to run Ubuntu on the bare metal and Windows 7 in a vm but it has to be able to run GW. Any tips if you are doing it this way or am I way off base?

I run GW using VMware on my XP machine. If you are going to run ubuntu I would advise you to look at running winex or cedega for best performance. http://www.cedega.com/gamesdb/games/...l?game_id=5106

I couldn't get the OpenGL addins working in VirtualBox XP install on my Fedora 14 box so I'm just running it via wine instead.

Everything works but I have had two issues: (1) sound will cut off and I have to go into options to reset audio to get it turned back on, and (2) my footprints look like glowing rectangles. Other than that, it plays just fine.

It's possible, depends of Ubuntu distr. I have experience of running it on Virtualbox, Vmware server 1.0 and 2.0 series starting from ubuntu 8.04. Running virtualbox on ubuntu is very easy, ocastionaly you can get some problems while starting machines/creating it, strange looking errors but theyre nothing more than permissions problems. After most of kernel updates or some major ubuntu updates you have to reconfigure your virtualbox nothing big, one simple line in terminal. Sometimes Virtualbox has problems importing machines from earlier versions, but it happens rarely. Imo Vbox would be best for you. Configuring network is fast and easy trough GUI.

PS. Vmware server is great but only on windows, its a pain on ubuntu
PS2. Ubuntu is nice but there is one sentence that explains how this distr works after some time: " there is microsoft windows, and ubuntu windows", i hope you get the picture. It works great untill 1st distr upgrade

if you have any specific questions/problems PM me on forums.

About Wine: Its great i preffer running Guildwars in wine when im on linux, but it depends of your PC mostly of your graph card and its linux support and drivers. Sometimes it works same as on windows, sometimes its little slower, but with pretty new PC and latest Wine, it should work fine if properly configured. (by latest i mean no the one from repositories but compiled from sources specially for your setup)

I don't know that much about it, and I haven't tried in a year or so, but I used to use Ubuntu and had GW running normally in Wine (but I couldn't fullscreen).

My laptop can take two hard drives. I have no problem setting one with Windows and the other with Ubuntu. Still have to boot the Ubuntu live-cd and see how the hardware is detected.

With the work I'm doing now I just thought it would be better to run Linux on the bare metal and virtualize Windows instead of Windows on the bare metal and virtualize Linux.

Laptop is a ThinkPad T400 with switchable graphics.
