Question Texmod: How to add/edit transparency?

Hi guys. If there's a thread with an explanation on this, please direct me there as I could not find it.

I want to know how to add transparency to armour, or items in general. I know it has -something- to do with the alpha channel, but I don't know anything about it. For example, if I wanted to make a cape transparent, but have a solid design on it, this can be done. Only an example, I moreso want to experiment with armour transparency. But how? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have photoshop CS5.

Also, here's my Shing Jea Monestary and monk mod.

1. First, you need to be working on the textures in .dds format.

2. I have no idea if Photoshop CS can edit .dds files. I do know that GIMP can with a plugin.

3. In GW, the alpha channel behaves *differently* for different textures. There seem to be three different ways GW processes the alpha data:
  • 1. Alpha as normal alpha. It should behave just like the alpha layer in any other image you'd edit in photoshop(/GIMP).
  • 2. Alpha as reflectiveness. The alpha controls how "shiny" an object is. Texmod is not capable of giving these objects transparency.
  • 3. Hybrid alpha. The alpha controls both transparency and reflectiveness. As far as I know, no one has bothered to work it out exactly how the channel is interpreted in these cases. It looks like the high bytes get used for reflectiveness and the low bytes get used for transparency (and the resolution across both domains is reduced 16x).

See this thread for more details.
