Hi.

I've been having problems with my ping for a long time now and up until recently I attributed that to my (very very) bad laptop. I recently got a new laptop and expected that problem to disappear but to my dismay, it did not. The reason I suspect something is wrong is that it only lags in specific areas i.e. GvG battles and my guild hall only. I never have problems in RA or in any PvE areas but my ping in my guild hall and during GvG is abysmal (usually anywhere from 5~10,000). I've tried reinstalling Gw but that seems to have had no effect. Since the problems only really happen in those specific areas I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the matter or if was some sort of glitch someone had seen before.

p.s. the internet connection is not the problem, my friends all use the same connection to Gw with no problems whatsoever.

High ping is attributed to the following:

Slow speed internet connections such as Dial-Up and DSL. A cable high-speed connection is preferred for optimal ping. Bandwidth is not a factor in ping so don't think you need to spend extra money for a high bandwidth connection.

Poorly configured cable modem...meaning you are using a USB port in your cable modem. You want to use a two way ethernet cable when configuring your cable modem for highest speeds.

If this is a wireless connection, you probably have a terrible router and/or poorly configured router.

Also remember that ping is location-dependent. The further you are from the server, the higher your latency.

Once the hardware troubleshooting is out of the way, I will talk to you about tweaking Windows for lower pings.

Give me as much information as possible about your hardware setup (router, cable modem, ISP, connection type, etc)

He said it works fine in most areas except GH and GVG.

This is a tricky one because unlike pve it's not like he can change districts. Gh and GVG shouldn't cause ping to drop. There must be something else at play. Like do all your friends play GW and GVG at the same time on the connection? Try it without them playing and see.

Am in Krom's guild, and live on the same campus.

Confirmed stupid lag on Frozen Isle, Uncharted, and Wurms. No one else on the same wireless has these problems. Actually disconnected entirely (within moments of connection problem) on Frozen the other night. We were almost certainly on American servers for the match.

What I meant was that we are on the same university campus not the same router.. The connection speed is certainly adequate. My network drivers are all up to date and I play on an Acer 5742G if that helps. I don't have much information on the connection but I'll try and find out. I'm not really tech savvy but is there any kind of diagnostic you guys know of that I can run on my laptop that could help?

Is the lag consistent, ie is there like a fixed .5s/1s delay on when you try and do something? or is it will be okay until a lot of action starts like spells firing etc? if it's the second it could very well be an MTU issue.

A lot of ISPs route TCP/UDP the way they want the data to go, and fairly often one of the hops on route can be having issues and be dropping packets or is just plain down at the time. In the good ol days you could report this to your ISP and they'd route around dodgy hops but these days far to many people around to cater to each person.

Doing /ip in each of the GHs will give an idea of the range that GH operates. For me Wurms is 206.127.146.63 and Imperial is 64.25.39.32. Routing to the 206.127 range is currently on a totally different backbone compared to 64.25. And while the IPs are both registered to NCSoft in the US, it seems 206.127 is actually in Europe(maybe Germany) but it seems that several of the hops are dead atm so can't get an accurate location. And these dead hops are likely to be the issue, it could be MTU related so i'll post my guide i did for my community members when we were playing DAoC/Uthgard.

MTU guide:



A fair few online games need their MTU tweaking for optimal performance where you need every fraction of a second when playing in high end competitive matches. Sometimes the lag just can't be helped(due to the distance) and i know in the past if you played against Japanese or Korean guilds sometimes their server will get priority, and depending on which Region you had your toon set to made a massive difference as it routed the data differently. I'm not sure if that is still the case in GvG though.

edit: you could also try opening a command prompt from the GWs directory and launching it with: gw.exe -daig

this will perform a whole bunch of network tests against their different IPs, you can then send to arenanet and probably your best 1st step. In the past when routing problems have arisen arenanet have been able to get dodgy hops routed around or got the ISPs to fix them.

Edit2: From my quick tests it's far more than an MTU issue here, it's a hardware problem on route so i think arenanet will need to get involved...in theory a hop could refuse ICMP echo(ping) requests but that's not very likely as it's a basic and quick diagnostic tool for each hop(a very expensive router)

This can happen, for example, with players who hang out in American districts, then go to a European guild hall. (You can see on your Guild window which territory it belongs to).

Some people have trouble in GvG if it's in Euro servers. (disconnects, lag, etc).

I for example, cannot map at all to Polish district.
