The amount of experience you get for a kill, assuming you participated in the kill, depends only on level difference and the number of members in your party. i am unsure of the exact numbers but i know that you cannot receive experience if the target killed was more than 5 levels lower than you. xp gained is split equally among your party, depending on their level relative to the kill as well.

If you're wondering how long it will take you to level up, it's so easy you won't notice it. Leveling up is definatly a minor part of this game. Exp is almost unimportant. But you gain exp depending on the creatures level and the number of people in your party. It gets divided up amongst your party members (includes henchies).

Does this mean that even when you are in a party, you must participate in the kill to get exp? therefore, would a monk gain no exp were he/she to spend the whole battle healing instead of making any hits?

you are considered participating if you attack the target, use a skill on the target, or use a skill on someont that is participating. you could theoretically make a long chain of players with some nowhere near the target and still get xp.
