From what I've seen GW has a pretty massive world... I was dumbfounded by how big the "pre-searing" world was.

What I find amusing is that if you go play WoW (I played in the Alpha, Beta, and then about 6 months into release) you'll see all kinds of parties getting organized to go into "Instances" and that's a big selling point. In GW, its all instanced and here in this thread people are griping about it.

Now all that said, I'd compare GW more to Neverwinter Nights when you jump into a "persistent world" in NWN. For the record, I mean that as high praise.

Today I tried the Arena for the first time and what a blast that is! I can't wait to get deeper into the world and into other kinds of PvP. I'm not normally a big fan of PvP (I liked it in DAoC and that's about it) but here it just seems like its done right and is going to be a blast.

WoW's upcoming Battlegrounds sound cool, too, but I just don't want to spend hundreds of hours getting to level 50 or 60 or whatever in order to be competitive.

And the lack of a monthly fee doesn't suck, either.

I liked WoW for a long time. Now I like GW. I'd say they're both good games, depending on how much time you want to sink into a game, and how important balanced PvP is to you.

No two games made are alike. Look at Dark Age of Camelot. I spent a lot of time on it. I then moved to World of Warcraft, and now Guild Wars. There is something in each game for everyone. Try them out and play what you like. I play all three and change depending on my mood. Now, someday someone will get it right and compain the best part of all three games. I hope that dosen't happen, because then I would have to quite my job and become a hermit who only plays computer games.

What "type" are you refering to there are amny diferent types of MMOs, not all are EQ.

The MM in MMO stands for Massively Multiplayer... Not massive world. That is what I meant. This is not massively multiplayer, it's just multiplayer.

Yall forgeting Lag. I played WOW for about 2 monthes and I would probably be playing it now if my computer didn't grind to nothign when I entered a duel. I don't even want to think about what happened with raids.
There is also balance in classes.

It's not. Massive means everyone in the world, all 1000+ or whatever can come together in the same area and see each other and do things as a group. It will be laggy as hell, but it can be done. You can't do that in GW, districts get locked if there are too many people in them. 50 is far from massive.

Agin all MMOs are NOT EQ. 50x the 130ish servers that where in ascalon onpening day. Everyone one of thoughs players hae the oppertunity to meet each other without doing anything other than progressing in the game.

Muiltiple amounts of players all playing at the same time is well........... massive.

By that logic Diablo 2, Dungeon Seige, Sacred, Counter Strike and Halo 2 are all MMOs. There are thousands of people playing them online at the same time, and they can meet each other at any time.

But they aren't. In order to be a MMO they need to be in the same game, in the same world. Each district and instance in GW is a seperate world.

*sigh* This is getting old fast...

guild wars = less grind more team based, and less fun imo

wow = more grind, and my favorite ganking, and more fun imo


I am more of a 1 vs 1 type of guy, nothing like a good duel. I dont like the fact that unless you have a certain team setup in gw you will most like;y lose. I am tired of seeing w/m in guild wars too.

Okay In my strong opinion WoW vs Guild Wars is pretty much comparing apples to oranges but on a soley objective video-game vs video-game perspective I'll try to tell ya what I think. Currently I have a 60 rogue on WoW that I have put a lot of time into creating...so WoW will provide players with a stronger more intimate and "RPGical" feel to the game and your character (good one huh?) however GW doesn't really provide as much means of role-playing as a true MMORP like WoW does. WoW also throws in a decent amount of PvP (especially if you're on a PvP Server) and the PvP also draws back into the RPG aspect of the game by making it on the spot action that can occur at any time with an opposing faction, so you really feel a sense of hate for the hord...I mean the opposing faction .
As for GW's strong suits as I can see them are fair, fun, fast, and FABULOUS (how's that for alliteration :P) PvP...just by looking at the skill's actions you can see they were made to be used on other players and not just mindless mobs. Whats really amazing about the RPG is that it is scheduled, meaning no more getting ganked by stupid,green, skinned *****s from the hord...I mean opposing faction . I also like that GW does throw in a fair amount of character customization by a means of skill and attribute choice, I'm sure everyone agrees with my utter disgust when you turn the virtual corner and find that your character is looking into the eyes of his clone. In GW skill choices may not always be exact opposites but rest assured that everyone will have different ideas of what skills they choose to use and what attributes they choose to lvl. The RPG aspect of GW is lacking a bit in my opinion, while I find it commendable for what they threw in it all seems very hard to do saying all of them are pretty much Group Required and trying to find a group in GW to say the least takes quite a bit of Shift !'ing and district hopping unless you have a very dedicated guild.
:: Deep Breath...almost done I swear, lol I'm a journalism major what'd ya expect :P :: In the end your gonna tend to lean more towards WoW for that true MMORPG "DnD" feel of playing since you are gonna spend A LOT of time lvling, working with LOADS of people for group stuff, and really feel like your immersed in the world of Azeroth, but you also get the added bonus of a fairly decent PvP if you decide to join a PvP server (which I recomend, unless you whine a lot and can't handle gettin' ganked a bit, avoid southshore ) For those who really wanna focus on team-based, strategic PvP though GW is for you, it is so obviously created for this that you can see it in the very opening screen when they give you the option to skip right to lvl 20, Role-Playing is not a strong suit in GW especially with lack of any really different armors, drops, etc. In a way I guess you could label GW as a type of Counter-strike with swords and magic, in that most of the PvP is scheduled and rule regulated, basically Grab some buddies, Choose your weapons, press Enter Mission, and off you go to PvP heaven. WoW vs GW...tough call really but scale tends to lean towards WoW due to its abitlity to really immerse you in the world, but like I said before apples and oranges...amazing RPG apples and Stellar pvp'ing oranges

I have to disagree with that; I haven't played WoW, but I'm very attached to my GW character, and in fact I think GW offers more actual roleplaying than other MMORPGs can, simply because the game isn't about leveling or finding ??ber-items (*shudder* - I hate that word :P), but about progressing through the story. It may seem like it's purely PvP, but the PvE part is awesome as well. In fact it's all I've been playing since release.

We are not talking about the RPG part, that is not in question. Its the prefix.

This shall never come to a close because there is no set definition of MMO. I just read the words it stands for.

Is it Massive? Why yes this game is quit massive

Is it Multiplayer? Why yes many many people are playing this game at the same time, on the same server.

Is it Online? this goes without question.


EDIT: Im sorry but that definition dont do anything to strengthen your agument, and dose all the work for me on my side. The definiton is not near as Clear cut as you make it. that leaves much room for a none EQ clone
