TeamSpeak = 3rd party voicecom software (not integrated in the game), that you run in the background to speak with your teammates.

It is just one of many simular programs, probably the most popular and most common (which doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best ).

It is completely free, so ... give it a try.

Our guild requires it's members to be at least 18, reason being is Teamspeak and all the legal problems having kids and adults on a gaming channel together. Plus I don't like to have to filter my language.

holy baloney... um... kiddo, this is a really great game, but I highly recommend putting your chat filter on its highest setting. I'm 29 years old, have no religion and no sense of morals and some of the garbage that people in this game spit out nearly burns my ears off...

Profane doesn't even come close. Hateful, vicious, racist, these start to touch on it.

NOTE: I'm not saying you'll come across this level of rudeness often, but if "dam"=profanity then you have to be prepared for some things that make the nastiest stuff you've heard sound like x-mas carols.

I agree with earlier poster that girls (real ones) may want to think twice about using voicecomm except with people they know. I've seen one too many fps chats turn nasty because of hormone overload. There's of course gay paedophiles out there too, but not as many as there are oversexed teens.

Question: you guys run TS _and_ ventrilo? Why?

When I start Guild wars I also start Teamspeak. Even if I am questing by myself, I chat with my guild while I am doing it.

I have both programs loaded on my computer, because when I tomb I may fill in with a guild and they may want me to listen to instruction over the voice communication. No biggie. Sometimes I keep my guild Teamspeak connection going and have Vent going with a pick up group. That way I can chat with my guild and my pick up team. But, there are plenty of pick up groups that do not run Voice Comm.

Now, see this topic has always been an issue for me. It really has, and after Shadowbane (for those of you who remember that dying game), I pretty much gave up on teamspeak / ventrillo for several reasons.

Being female, and sometimes the only female member of a group / guild, it seems things DO change, and change quite alot when it moves from an "impersonal" coversation of typing in a game, and actually talking to someone, even if you know you can just hang up at any time.

I mean, I have had enough "OMG, you're really a girl" to as stupid as "will you marry me" or as insulting enough as "do you like being on top?" LOL. Fortunetly I can laugh it off many times, but all I need is my boyfriend to walk into the room and see me with those headphones and having to explain talking to 18, or even 25 year old boys.

In SWG, I joined an "all female" group and that was pretty cool, though many did not use teamspeak or whatnot, cause frankly, most were not women, BUT THAT does not bother me, as long as they show some maturity, and MANY of these games are ROLEPLAYING anyway.

No... I like the fact that even though I play mostly female characters, most people are not 100% sure if I am female or male, and that's more than fine with me.

And for those of you who say you NEED this stuff to play these games, you don't. I can type VERY fast and communcate just as well with in game controls and such. Or I just won't join if this is a requirement.

That's just me. Though I think others have the same philosophy.

Jana, you may be able to type very fast, but we can not all type as fast as you. Especially while devoting 99% of our attention to a battle. If you want to keep your animosity, you should say you do not have a headset, and just listen to the babble on the communication software. Most of the time, for a decent group that is the only requirement.

I decided I needed a headset after one night of listening to how fast my guild chat could go.

I have to tell you that if you think you can type that fast you may be right, but for groups that use these programs, the Guild Wars chat channel turns into nothing but a "game information" panel. Not a way to communicate. Often times written chat in that channel can get ignored completely.

I agree, and do use it to listen many times, and have in the past, but suffice it to say, at some point it becomes a pressure tactic to actually speak. And it generally does not stop with just a NO. Maybe I have had little luck finding decent mature people who do not use profanity every other word (which I guess is alright, since that is normally how heterosexual males bond), or try to make you feel cheap.

At this point, I normally do get on and say something, just to shut people up, but then it all changes... something changes once 7 guys KNOW that there is a female on the other end.

I can't explain it... it may be a macho thing, or may just be a guy thing, but somehow, I feel like an outsider... like I have just invaded France yet again with my army

Anywho... just wanted to post something on this in case you all did not have the perspective I do.

Talking

I have to say, I have not played on teamspeak or vent with any women.

I am sure part of that is because my guild has no "active" women players in it. And, the majority of the players (I am guessing here) are males.

But I would hope that a little serious game talk would send the minds right of most players.

Then again, I'm 25, not the oldest in my guild, and the only young players I talk with are pretty mature. I probably would guarantee that there are stupid people out there.

I would disconnect on anyone that was offending me over teamspeak/vent, reguardless of sex. I would suggest the same to you.
