Default Using Shield without meeting its requirement

For example, a shield with the stats mentioned below

Armor 16 (req. 9 Strength)
+45 health while in stance
-2 damage received while in stance

So, while my character is in stance, he would get +45 health and -2 damage received.

As for the +16 AL, he would need 9 points in Strength.

My question is, if he does not 9 points in Strength, what armor rating would the shield give? Starter shield stats?

+5 AL

Was this question asked and answered before?

youre correct. The shield will give starter shield stats (+4) and you will recieve the +45/-2

It varies with the item. For example, a gold item drop typically has a higher base value than a blue item - though I don't know exactly what the deal is - it might be the area it was dropped in, with Golds more common in higher level areas. The best way to find out is to test it.

I believe for foci the range is +3 energy to +6 energy; shields may similary have a range up to about half the full value. I'm pretty certain for example that a fireball will be affected by shield armour, so you can engage a hydra outside augury rock, and observe the fire damage with and without the shield on, not in stance. Figure out the ratio of the damage (without shield:with shield), take the logarithm of it (any base) and divide by the log of 2 (same base). Now multiply by 40, et voila, you have the AL of the shield.

That is correct, the same goes for weapons. You'll get whatever mods it has, but in order to get an item's max base damage, you must meet the requirement.(For example, Furious Axe of Enchanting with dmg 6-28, req 9: you will get the double adrenaline, and your enchantments will last longer, but in order to do 6-28 damage, you must meet the req. But even then, if you have 9 in Axe Mastery, you won't do the full 6-28 damage. To get 100% of a weapon's damage potential, you must have at least 12 in that rank.
