Default WoW Player has some questions?

Hey whats up guys this is my first post, therefore I'm going to tell you little bit about myself. I've been playing PC games since the days of Doom, Duke3D, TF and etc. Lately I've been staying away from fps games that I curently play (CS:S/1.6, BF2, HL2 and etc) and I have been playing World of Warcraft. But at this moment I'm kind of bored with WoW, not saying that I'm epiced out and that I have the best gear, but more like I've been everywhere except Naxx and I really don't want to invest my time getting better epics since Burning Crusade is coming out. Now since I've told you about myself, I'm going to ask you couple of questions about WoW and GW comparison (not saying one is better then the other).

1. In WoW there is auction house, is there one in GW? If not how do you sell stuff (like Bind on Equip gear)?

2. In WoW you can get gear by doing PVE and/or PVP, is it the same situation on GW? In wow there is basically rank system for PVP, if you get higher level rank, you buy better gear?

3. Does your character in GW have tradeskills like WoW has for example Blacksmith and Miner.

4. When you are playing in PVP server (if GW has pvp and pve servers, not sure about that) can you gank anyone at anytime. In WoW there is Horde vs Alliance, so whats going on in GW? Guild vs Guild? But anyways can you gank people?

5. How long does it take you to get to lvl 20 (in WoW the fastest leveling is 8 weeks with a Hunter to lvl 60).

6. Are there any mounts? Fast way of transportation?

7. Is there any gear that shows status symbol? Like full tier 3 from Naxx? (very common on Laughing Skull server)

8. (Optional) Why is GW better then WoW, examples please (and also whats GW lacking when compared to Wow) e.g. customer support

Is there some way I can get something like 14-day trial for any of the Guild War versions, I kind of want to try it before I shell out $50.

Thank you guys for answering my questions (even though I'll probably come up with more). Thanks.

Forget everything you know about WoW and dont try to compare it with WoW.
Ask the questions as if you never played WoW, if you keep comparing it to WoW you might get disapointed big time.

1. No auction house; trade chat channels in towns.
2. You can of course get armor by buying it in pve; or in pvp you can use balthazar faction you gain to unlock runes to upgrade your armor (but you automatically have access to max armors with a pvp only character).
3. No, the devs have mentioned maybe adding life skills like fishing eventually.
4. No ganking; pvp only takes place in organized arenas with clearly defined teams.
5. You can easily max out in a week with casual play; even faster if you want to be a dork and get power leveled.
6. Nope; GW has instantaneous map travel. But Nightfall has a wurm you ride in one zone which isn't really like an actual mount.
7. Well there are fancy armors with cool skins. They have the same stats as regular armors but the skin is a lot more elaborate and cool looking.
8. I think the biggest advantage is the lack of grind. One of its biggest lackings is an auction house but the player base has been asking for it so much the devs are likely looking into it.

As far as trials; magazines will have trial keys from time to time. Or if you know someone that just bought GW their copy came with a trial key. You missed the world preview event a few weeks back where anyone could play; other than that there really isn't a trial you can just apply for like with WoW.

in pvp, you start as max level with max armor (of your choice) and max weapons. You do earn upgrades such as runes for your armor and mods for your weapons. These can be earned through PvE or PvP.

no tradeskills

you cannot "gank" anyone. You can only PvP in PvP arenas, and then it is team vs. team. You cannot randomly attack anyone anywhere.

Depends on which chapter you buy, longest would be a week or two if you didn't put that much time into it. With Factions, I've been able to level a necro to 20 in about 5 hours.

no mounts. But you can map travel to any city you have already visited.

1) No AH, which is really a shame. You can either try to sell things in game directly to other players or try on of the various auction web sites.

2) For GW, you find equipment in PvE or you are gifted equipment for a PvP Only character. Both sets have the same maximum values, so it doesn't really matter which you use.

3) No. Pretty straight forward on that one.

4) The game is open-server (every player in the world on one "server"), but everything is pure instanced so it's impossible to gank anyone. PvP is done in special arenas only.

5) Depends. Could be anywhere from 20-100 hours, sometimes less. I think the fastest I've ever heard of was about 8 hours. But, the point of the game here is what you do after you get to level 20. This game is all about the endgame.

6) Nope. Map Travel is instant, so there's no need for mounts.

7) There is gear that's like a status symbol, but it doesn't give any additional benefit. It's either extremely rare weapon skins (the Crystaline Sword is by far the most rare) and certain armor types are very expensive (Obsidian Armor, aka FoW Armor, can cost millions of gold compared to other sets that cost in the 20k range).

8) That's a tough one. I've played both and I like both, but they're so dis-similar that you can't really say one is better than the other. There's certain sticking points, like there's a bit more to do in WoW with the tradeskill system and the AH makes selling items a snap, while the difficulty in GW is much higher (which makes the game more rewarding for me) and the customer service is conciderably better. PvP is better in GW because it's more balanced, PvE is better in WoW because it's more immersive and longer. Honestly, I think that's about as far as a comparison could go.

At the very least, I recommend trying GW. If you buy it, there's no monthly fee so you could play that if you get bored with your pay-per-month games. And, much like WoW, they do not delete characters or accounts that I've heard of, so it doesn't matter how long you spend away.

1. In WoW there is auction house, is there one in GW? If not how do you sell stuff (like Bind on Equip gear)?

We sell through major cities, or through here... the forums.. or the auction house on the forums

2. In WoW you can get gear by doing PVE and/or PVP, is it the same situation on GW? In wow there is basically rank system for PVP, if you get higher level rank, you buy better gear?

You don't necessarily get better gear or armor rating, but you get better looking skins which shows your superiority.. in some cases... it doesn't. But anways, yes. There is no "higher rank" = buy better gear, but there is a title system with multiple types of pvp's and you can show it off to your buddies
Like when you do Halls of Heroes, you gain fame and eventually a rank

3. Does your character in GW have tradeskills like WoW has for example Blacksmith and Miner.

Nope, has been discussed. Does not fit in guild wars in my opinion.

4. When you are playing in PVP server (if GW has pvp and pve servers, not sure about that) can you gank anyone at anytime. In WoW there is Horde vs Alliance, so whats going on in GW? Guild vs Guild? But anyways can you gank people?

Nope, but there are several PvP areas. and Guild War's PvP is more advanced/equal in my opinion. No ganking, this is a team game btw too. You can't just solo a 5 people at the same time. Nope, none of that.

5. How long does it take you to get to lvl 20 (in WoW the fastest leveling is 8 weeks with a Hunter to lvl 60).

You can get it in a week if you want. If you do it in factions, maybe a couple days

6. Are there any mounts? Fast way of transportation?

No, we travel instantly by pressing map and double clicking towns we wish to go to. Although this sounds cheap, this also means you get out of your "instance" with your party, which is kind of stupid to do. There is no need for mounts, its... also not needed in Guild Wars. None of us can imagine a 8 man group with all mounts charging for the Guild Lord in a guild battle O.O

7. Is there any gear that shows status symbol? Like full tier 3 from Naxx? (very common on Laughing Skull server)

Well, as a experienced player, I know most of the different armor types and such. If another player recognizes you have more expensive armor, it shows your PvE Status. Also.... btw... all armor is crafted. There is no "armor" drops, everything is made from a crafter. You need Money + Materials for it

8. (Optional) Why is GW better then WoW, examples please (and also whats GW lacking when compared to Wow) e.g. customer support

Guild Wars is not Pay to Play. Guild Wars excels in PvP. WoW excels in PvE. Guild Wars has Guild Halls. World of Warcraft has many areas to grind. Guild Wars is teamplay work, and you cannot grind everything you want alone with simple skills. Leveling is one of the most insignificant things in Guild Wars. At WoW, 1-59 is the whole game. In WoW, at level 60, all you do is click 1 and 2. In Guild Wars, the game starts at level 20 where you are far from finished with the game. In Guild Wars, when you farm, you have to use specific builds that'll work very well. It's takes some work to make a good build, and its very challenging in some Areas. Guild Wars has customer support, and they are very effective. We have in game meetings with DEV's in the game, who listen to our questions as best as they can and try talking to us. There is no "GM" that will bring back all your items because you have been hacked. The only different types of servers in Guild Wars are country-based. Korea, America, Europe... etc. Grinding is not too big in Guild Wars either, the only thing to do with money is to buy better skins, more skills, and etc.

Is there some way I can get something like 14-day trial for any of the Guild War versions, I kind of want to try it before I shell out $50.

Sorry, no. Not currently. During some preview events, they allow everyone to play for free.

You may dislike Guild Wars, because it lacks many PvE aspects, such as profession, many MANY instances, but you will find Guild Wars to have some unique things that many other games to not have. We hope you come and enjoy playing.

LASTLY!, There has been 1 expansion out called Guild Wars:Factions and there's the original called Guild Wars. These are all continent separated. In a couple of weeks, a new expansion called Nightfall will come out with many great new features everyone in the Guild Wars Community is excited about. Here's a tip: YOu might want to get Guild Wars now... or you might regret it when you buy it and miss all the tons of events... such as Wintersday, Halloween (In like 2 week), Dragon Festival (1 week). Now, lastly, the Guild Wars community here in GWG can really change things around. The programmers listen to our responses, if we post about problems or new ideas and they sometimes really do what we ask for (Such as the storage upgrade)
Hope you enjoy Guild Wars.

Ok, did some more reading online and in forums, but still have some more questions?

(I'm sorry about that I'm still comparing WoW vs GW but...)

Lets talk about PVP. Everyone says that GW is more pvp based!

The reason that I PVP in WoW, whether its in world pvp or battleground pvp is because of the rewards.

For example I would gank other 60s, and go to battlegrounds so I can get more Honor which means my rank goes up, therefore in higher ranks I get better armor sets blues, epics, and then epic weapons.

What kind of ranking system does GW have? Higher ranks means more braging rights? Or higher ranks means you get better gear?

And then also in WoW there is faction rewards from different battlegrounds that give you specific types of epic armor upgrades. Anythinging like that in GW, different arenas for different ranks/armor/upgrades?

Thanks.

Oh and do you know of any magazines that might have a trial key in there?

Pretty much bragging rights. Your gear stays the same as everyone's, there is no 'super' armor or weapons. Maxed weapons can be had for quite cheap too in PvE, and in pvp you get them free.

Only thing I know of material rewards for is the Hall of Heroes chest, which drops nice loot after a win. Balthazar faction comes from kills and wins in pvp, which you can use to unlock things for pvp characters. Glad points are 10 consecutive wins in the arenas, and Fame comes from winning at Hero's Ascent.

I have a trial key from my nightfall preview pack, pm me if you want it.

Actually, if you ask me, if I search around the house a little I might find a trial key you could use (From preordering nightfall). Also... the type of PvP guild Wars has is the

12v12 Alliance Battle- Which allows 3 teams of 4 to battle all out for 7 main area points in the map, where NPC's come and aid you. You rez after a few seconds, and holding 7 points w.o losing them for 1 minute lets you win. To normally win, one side has to have 500 kills (its Luxons Vs Kurzick.. Which is Factions Only)

8v8 Guild Battle- Guilds battle all out in their guild halls, with NPC's, a guild lord, body guards, archers, and knights. They capture the flag stand for a morale boost (More hp & energy), and the point is to kill the opposing guild's Guild Lord. GvG's are very fun, although challenging too. You can gain titles for beating the top ranked guilds, and being #1-20 in the guild ladder makes you VERY VERY famous.

4v4 random area & Team Arenas- Random areas consists of 2 teams of 4 battling each other. The teams are randomized. Its the same for team arenas, except you choose the team you want. Random Arena is known for its countless noobs flooding it.

1v1 Battle- Although guild wars is not made for this, you can do a 1v1 battle system in Guild Wars. I, myself, think this is very stupid, but its your choice.

Halls of Heroes 6v6- The greatest of heroes battle all out for favor of the gods. 2 teams of 6 prove their worthyness by battling others. Many top rated guilds come here. Each win gives you a fame point, then another fame additional fame point. Which means when you win 1 match, you get 1 fame. The 2nd consecutive win is 2 win. Then 3, all the way up to 40 I BELIEVE. The more fame means a higher rank you have, which is up to like 13 (Sorry, I don't know very well). Higher rank shows superiority in PvP, GREATLY, because you can do an emote that shows your rank (A tiger appears..etc).

Fort Aspenwood- The luxon side, with the aid of various NPC's + Siege Turtles (Who shoot bombs), must break through the Kurzick Fort and destroy the weaponry. This is very fun, and kind of like a "war" thing, where you also need to gain material so teh defending side (Kurzciks) can win faster.

Jade Quarry- Yuo need (I think 10) materials transported. You gain a control point and then a siege turlte (Luxon) or a Juggernaut (Kurzick) appears and grabs a load of amber or jadeiete. They will walk back to the base and once it is full transported, they get one point. The opposing sides will kill each other, try capturing their points, and kill the juggernauts or siege turtles that are helpless.

In the 12v12 alliance battles, Fort Aspenwood, Jade Quarry, you gain faction points for the alliance you battled for (Luxons or Kurzicks) and gain faction. Faction can be traded for faction for your guild. The guilds with the most factions control the main towns of the alliance (Top Kurzcik Faction Guild owns the Kurzick Main Town). The faction can also be traded for 2 different types of materials (Jadeites for Luxons... Amber for Kurzicks) which are needed to make armor in the Luxon or Kurzick Towns.
