Nope, probably not. They can keep track of the chat logs if you report the character. Did your buddy report him?

Or, and more importantly, log on to the account with the given information?

Because that would not have been the best idea...

EDIT: Heh, i dun't reid gud...

Just lose the info and if you know a name of a character from the account maybe PM him in game and say hey man some random guy pmed me and gave me you account info. Please change the pass. Even if you get a reponse like who put you up to this or don't be a dumb*** more then likely it will scare him enough he will change it. Just don't prove to him you know the info cause he might report and I guess anet would review chat logs but I don't know. I just don't want to get anyone in trouble.

he stated that his friend did log on the account, which is just human curiosity. this probably wasn't the best idea, but i wouldn't be concerned

How can ANet ban you for something that was passed between two members of a non-affiliated fan forum via the private messaging option?

IP is logged when you log in to GW, and I think he refered to an IN GAME WISPER.

I actually had this happen to me. I logged into the account, just out of curiosity. Of course, the account/pass had been given to multiple other people and it was empty. Within a few hours, the compromised account had been banned.

No trouble to me, though.

Warning.. Outrageous conspiracy theory ahead!

Two until recently best friends had a falling out. Having been best friends one of them was aware of the others login details. Now being somewhere in game this person took offence at something your friend did like have nicer armor for example. Passing on his now not best friends details to your friend that person was hoping that your friend would log into the account, steal some or all of his stuff then when his friend reported the theft your friends account would be identified as the recipient of the goods. This would have the effect of your friends account getting a permanent ban (for having nicer armor) and his friends account losing all his hard earned stuff thus punishing him as well for having that argument about who got the last chocolate biscuit.

All theories aside that's a really silly thing to do just to log into an account that someone whispered you ingame.. Who knows what will come of it.

There you go, the OP has just confirmed it was via private messaging. If that's the case then ANet have no reason at all to ban you because the details weren't sold, or even offered for sale, and were given freely over the private message system on a non-affiliated fan forum.

Like Stockholm said, your ip address is recorded when you log in. If said account was used for botting, spamming or some other illegal activity and Anet decides to trace and ban all ips that accessed that account.... Its just a possible scenario, anyway. And with the login info being obtained out of game, its just that much harder to prove that you really have nothing to do with that account.

@op Your friend probably has nothing to worry about, but just tell him to ignore such randomness in the future.
