Default GW > GW2: What's the real deal?

Hey all,

I cant find any definitive answer on this, so I thought someone here might have a more concrete answer:

Will all current GW titles be "defunct" (i.e. cease to exist/be playable) once GW2 is released? If so, how long do we have before GW2 is released?

I've been playing GW on-and-off since it's release, and my wife, my daughter and my self have all been very into playing over the last eight months or so, most campaigns.

I've seen around people stating that GW will cease to exist once GW2 is released, which would be rather disappointing, since there's still so much for us to do.

Can anyone deny or confirm this to be the case?

Thanks in advance.

Gaile Gray, ANet's community relations representative, has said that ANet will maintain GW for as long as people continue to play. There's lots of doom and gloom from players, but it is only rumor. A large amount of GW players may migrate to GW2 of course, and their comments can lead to the impression that GW will cease to be.

More info about GW2 here and here.

If it's anything like other games, there will still be a strong following for the original of people that think the sequel sucks.

Well, as everything with GW2, or indeed the future, no-one knows. I would say that GW2 will (hopefully) be the successor of GW1 in every aspect. I know for a fact that the HoM has a time limit, I remember reading here that soon after GW2 is released it will be "closed" i.e. you cannot add anything to it to further your HoM in GW2. This would be indicative that they are planning to keep GW1 open for a while, at least.

i belive that is to keep people from getting the pure cash titles via easy HoH chest rewards because there will be noone left playing lol.

Lets put it this way. EotN lets us get 'something' in GW2, but what that is, we don't know, however if it's good I'll probably want it on multiple characters, which means filling in the hall multiple times over, so I'll still be playing GW1 quite a bit once 2 comes out.

They've posted in several articles and sites that they are going to keep GW1 up, holidays and all, until there is no one playing it. So I think your family still has plenty of time to continue playing the game.

yeah as others are saying, it will continue after the release of guild wars 2,,

i personally have never heard of the HoM being on a timer, but maybe i missed that,

my conclusion is that after a while gw 1 will become rather dried up and Anet will end up closing the servers, but hey ya never know, we might get lucky

since I WONT be getting gw2 I am counting on gw1 continuing.

so far that is what is planned.

If there is a change I am sure they will let us know....so until then (and since gw2 is still very far off) I will continue to play gw as if there is no mention of a gw2.

They can't close down GW1, since people will be upset that their time/money has just been shoved down the tube. I think it might be best to have GW1 and 2 share teh same server. So maybe you can add to your new account, but the old chars can't go into the new places and the news cant go into the old places. Plus every so often we could have a GW1 vs GW2 player fight on PvP

As much as I cant wait to play Katherine's decendent (whom I have already named Renita), I will still like to visit Katherine and my other girls from time to time. Besides, I want a full collection of Canthan New Year minis so GW 1 has to be around for at least another 10 years! ^^

I think it will be like Everquest 1 and 2, some play 1, some play 2, some play both. They aren't closing down Starcraft 1 because 2 is in the works. They wont do that to GW. It would just be bad business to close down GW 1. I think a lot of GW 1 vets will probably be happy if GW 1 stays on, we might actually get some peace and quiet in main towns! ^^"

You should check out this article in which ArenaNet founder Jeff Strain and Guild Wars lead designer Ben Miller are interviewed and quoted about Guild Wars 2. It is almost one year old, but it is the most informative info. that I have found on the topic.

Check it out: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=161479

From what I've heard/read, GW2 will have many departures from GW1's mechanics. As such, I'm sure there will still be a strong following for GW1, even when GW2 comes out.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to take a "wait and see" approach; if GW2 looks good, I'll get it. If it doesn't then I won't...

They have said that the servers will remain running, but you never know. They may indeed close them down. It's happened with some games before that are not run on a centralized network (Battle.net for example).

I wish "SOGWTT" would stop trolling all these GW2 topics. It's rude and frankly, it is forum trolling.

Anyway, as for the rest of the responses here, I thank you for your time and input. It makes sense that they would keep GW1 going, but you never know, and I was beginning to hear things to the contrary.

I appreciate what seems to be relatively convincing information backing-up the continuation of GW1, though I would certainly be interested in GW2, if it turns out well.

Thanks, and cheers.

Thanks for that info as well, and good point... even though they've said things will remain running, they could go the way of Battle.net if they deem it "not worth" continuing GW1.

...and thanks for that, as well. That whole "SOGWTT" response was ridiculous, and truly irritating.

Cheers.
