When reading though the thread I was actually going to post about this cause I figured it might help.
It depends on what type of PvP you do. (I can't give that much detail, as I'm not experienced with GvG or HA). There is a queue, but little wait from my experience.

Guild vs. Guild: You make a party with 7 other people from your guild and fight another guild. You can do an informal fight against another guild of your choice or do a rated match against a random (I think) guild. Victory is to get into the enemy's base and kill their Guild Lord.

Heroes' Ascent/Hall of Heroes: Again this is 8v8, but there are different game types with different victory conditions. If a player leaves then you have to play one man down (another player cannot join in) until the next round, where you will get an NPC ally.

Hero Battles: You and three heroes vs. someone else and their three heroes.

Random Arena: 4v4, You don't make a team, you just the timer and when it hits 0 the game randomly (sort of) takes 8 people and throws them between two teams. Just like HA there are different types.

Team Arena: Exactly like RA, except you pick your own teams.

Alliance Battles (my favorite): This is where the Kurzick/Luxon stuff comes in from the Factions campaign. It is a 'Territories' games where you have to hold all points for one minute or reach 500 points. It is 12v12 (except it is broken into 3 teams of 4 on each side, so its 3x4 vs. 3x4), you make your team of 4, start the timer, and it will throw 3 teams from each side together.

In Alliance Battle there is no death penalty (res sickness) and you res at your base or closest res shrine every 10-20 seconds or so (I forget). All other forms of PvP do have death penalty, but holding a flag stand and killing your opponents can slowly remove it.

I'm sorry if I didn't explain it very well, I'm not that big of a PvP person outside of Alliance Battles.

Maybe I should have just linked to here...

But now that I've already typed it all I might as well post it.

I 'd say Ab is most simmilar to battlegrounds in WOW ( mindless running around and killing ppl with some goal which noone follows ) rest req. a bit of skill and cordination with your team.
