1. Anet have said they intend on keeping GW server's running after GW2 comes out.

2. Aope, Anet can do what they want with the servers and have no legal obligation afaik to keep GW server's running.

Well, we look at the 10 year old game Diablo 2 and you can still buy it today. I also add that battlenet servers for d2 are still running with 30,000+ playing Diablo 2, D2X alone.

And I believe that in one of the EoTN preview videos the narrator of the video explained that they would keep the servers up as long as players would continue to play so I don't see the servers being taken down any time soon, unless immense amounts of people just stop playing and it becomes pointless to keep paying the electric bill to run those servers.

As Kamatsu said they don't have to keep em running, but it'd be bullshit to take them down after GW2 comes out or whenever 'just because' they can (unless like I said the player count drops into the extreme danger zone), but we as players also have no obligation to buy their sequel game if they were to do such a thing, I for one would turn right around and put the GW2 box right back on the shelf and keep the 50 bucks in my wallet.

I would really love this single player version^^ maybe off-line, if it's possible

OT:I heard that they will keep GW servers running if there will be enough people playing still..

GW1's Hall of Monuments will tie into GW2's HoM, so I don't expect Anet to take town GW1's servers.

1. ArenaNet does not intend to take down the GW servers as long as people keep playing. They will continue to sell GW after GW2 is released. When you can no longer buy the game, you will know the end is nearing.

Don't forget that some people will prefer GW to GW2.

NOTE: The HoM benefit has a time limit. ArenaNet has stated that there will be a deadline for claiming rewards. This will mean that longtime GW players will reap those benefits, but newer players will be unable to get them. Of course, that decision could change.

2. No game company is legally required to keep online servers running. Witness the demise of the servers for many MMOs released in the last few years. They also are not required to put the game into the public domain so people can set up their own servers. Nor are they required (or likely to invest the manpower) into converting the game to offline.

There would be people from the game that would develop another GWLP or something to make the game playable.. think about it, you got a GW.DAT and GW.EXE file as a basis to work with, all you need is a small server to run the instances and code and let the playing PC do the work (like it currently does) in processing the graphics and maps.

If i understood correctly, when a new character in GW2 claims his rewards from GW1 (whatever they will be), he won't be able to update his HoM in his linked GW1 account anymore (or maybe he will be able to update it, but without any consequence in GW2).

In this way, if you buy a new GW1 account, you can still work on your HoM to increase your GW2 rewards, until you start a new GW2 account and link it with your GW1 account (i don't know how it will work though..i'm only guessing).

Well, i can also think about the fact that, if they let people fill their HoM while playing GW2, and let the new things added to the HoM produce more rewards in GW2, even if the two account are already linked, probably many people who didn't play GW1 will buy it to gain those benefits (if these benefits are valuable of course)..more money to ANet in this way (but this will obviously cause the old GW1 players QQ..)

Only they know for sure, but my guess would be yes, they will stop selling GW1 soon after the release of GW2

You'd have to read the EULA carefully to be sure, but I would say no, they are not obligated to keep GW1 running forever. I would say that they would be obligated to keep GW1 running for a "reasonable" length of time after they stop selling new copies of GW1. Obviously, they can't "reasonably" shut down GW1 like 2 weeks after they stop selling it.

Keep in mind that GW1 is just software running on a server farm. They will, no doubt, be using the same server farm(s) to run GW2. As time goes on, GW1 will keep using less and less of the server resources. Depending upon how things go, they may never need to actually take GW1 off the servers.
