Default How does unlocking skills work... and what are your unlocking stategies?

OK, I have everything but the Eye expansion, and please let me know if that has an impact on this...

So how does unlocking skills work? Say I have an RP Elementalist/Monk. I unlock a normal skill, Fireball for the Elementalist... this skill is now available for whom?

All PvP Characters I create?
All Heros?
Other RP Elementalists?

Does it change if it's an elite skill I had to capture? Say it's Thunderclap. Who gains access?

OK, now say I want RP characters that are... my Elementalist/Monk, a Paragon/Warrior, and a Ranger/???. That's it for now. Does the above answer mean that I can use my best character (Elementalist/Monk) and have her switch jobs so I can unlock skills for other RP characters, or the Elentalist/Monk should only focus on the skills she would use (Face it, no reason for her ever to go Warrior if not just to learn skills), and I should use the other characters as necessary, for example, the Paragon to focus on Paragon and eventually Dervish skills?

Thanks all!

If you unlock a normal skill like Fireball for your ele, all heroes and pvp characters have access to it. However, it's not unlocked so you can use an ele tome on another pve(roleplaying) character and they can learn any other non elite ele skill you have unlocked.
For thunderclap, you can use it on heroes, pvp characters and the character you captured it on. You'll have to use an elite ele tome to obtain it on another elemtnalist secondary or primary or just cap it again.

There's a difference between unlocked skills and learned skills. Unlocked skills are available for all your PvP characters and all your heroes, whether it's elite or not. That's it. Learned skills are really only for PvE characters.

With PvE characters, you learn skills though skill quests, buying them at skill trainers, tomes (for unlocked skills), or capping them from bosses. Once a skill is learned on a PvE character, it's also unlocked for the account if it wasn't already.

For example, if your Elementalist caps Thunderclap from a boss, that specific character, all your PvP characters, and all your heroes can use Thunderclap. Your other PvE characters - including Elementalists if you have multiples - cannot use this skill until they have learned it through one of the above methods.

Skills you unlock via a skill trainer in for example Lion's Arch, are unlocked for the RP character you unlocked it with and all PvP Characters and also on all your Heroes.

If you unlock a skill at a Priest of Baltazar that skill is unlocked for PvP characters and all your Heroes.

If you capture an Elite skill, it's unlocked for the RP character your capped it with, all PvP characters and all Heroes

Thanks all.

So basically, a little while ago when I first learned about Signet of Capture, I used my Elementalist/Monk to grab Barrage. I switched her to Elementalist/Ranger, then grabbed Barrage from the enemy in one of the Proph missions.

Now, this skill is already unlocked on all PvP Rangers I believe. (Thought I read something about this). Still, even if it's not, since I grabbed it, it is unlocked on this account for all Heroes and PvP characters.

To get this skill learned on a PvE (RP) Ranger, I would need to find (or purchase) and use an Elite Skill Tome correct?

Thanks all! And it sound like I should focus my characters on their primary job skill wise, and those skills they will either use or skills for secondary jobs that I do not plan to use for a PvE character. Thanks again!

As regards for strategies i find that a lot of powerful skills are only available from a skill trainer near the end of campaigns. So what i did when first starting nightfall for example, is unlock the more powerful/widely used skills using balthazar faction. This allows you to learn the skills from any skill trainer in nightfall, so i had a decent bar even without venturing past kamadan. (or you could use a skill tome)

Thats the only real strategy i had as a new player, pretty usefull if your starting a new proffession and have little or no skills already unlocked.

Wait a second...you are saying you can learn any unlocked skill from any nightfall (hero?) skill trainer?

Nope.

When you unlock a skill, that skill becomes available at any skill trainer in the respective game. For example, if you unlock Shock, any skill trainer in Prophecies (can't just say Tyria) will offer you Shock, assuming one of your two professions is Elementalist. If you unlock Mystic Regeneration, any skill trainer in Elona will offer you Mystic Regeneration (if you're a Dervish). etc. etc.

I might be wrong on this part, but if you unlock a core skill, I think any non-hero skill trainer will offer you said core skill.
