Just a couple of q's:

Upgrading weps - are the upgrades (hilts, pommels et al) removable once used?

Upgrade components - where are they got from, and at what level/stage of the game (prophecies) can one expect to start getting them?

Mission/quest logs - is there any way of accessing completed quests and missions?

Bear with me...as time goes on, I'll morph from uneducated ass-itch to all round entertainer. Hopefully.

Welcome to Guild Wars! Everyone started at the beginning so don't feel too bruised.

1. Simply speaking, yes... they are removable... but to avoid the possibility of destroying the weapon, you should use a Perfect salvage kit. These are obtainable in Eye of the North. If saving the weapon is not an issue, you can use an Expert or Superior salvage kit to remove the upgrade. Again, there would be a chance of destroying the weapon this way.

2. Not certain, but it seemed to me that upgrades started showing up on dropped weapons fairly early in the campaign. They were, however, utter trash (nowhere near maximum stats). "Good" upgrades won't drop until farther into the game.

3. Unfortunately, no. *sigh*

Expectantly awaiting the morph. *smile*

Merci beaucoup for the swift reply, info locked, cocked and ready to rock. Sigh indeed at the lack of a completed quest log...I feared the worst when a guild buddy said he kept an excel spreadsheet! Madness - anyhoo without the need for improvement we would become spoiled demanding children. Drip feeding is a tried and tested evader of for-grantedness.

Weapon upgrades may be retrieved with an expert, superior, charr, or perfect salvage kit. A superior salvage kit is merely an expert kit with more charges. Expert salvage kits will prompt you to select which upgrade you wish and have a chance, based on several factors, to destroy the item. A perfect salvage kit will never destroy the weapon. Not all weapons may be salvaged. You may read more about salvage kits in the links provided, including exceptions and more specifics.

Upgrades are mainly obtained from random drops, and can be found as early as Pre-Sear. See link for additional information.

Quests are removed from your log once you have completed them and accepted the reward. The mission outposts will have crossed weapon(s) on the map once you have completed them, and the number and configuration of the weapons displays the mission objectives completed.

You will notice a number of links in this post. Guild Wars has an official wiki which is integrated into the game. You may find information how to access the wiki in-game here. It is a very useful resource. There is also an unofficial wiki here.

1.) yes. The exception to this is older weapons that have inherent inscriptions that cannot be modified.

2.) They can be taken of any weapon you find at any stage of the game. Better ones come off of max weapon which you will start finding in areas once you are about lvl 20.

3.) What do you mean? Missions can be repeated again after completion if you so choose. Many quests however are one time and done.

Just like a check list of quests that have been completed I mean, so as to know whether or not you've done em all.

Once you complete a mission, you see a sword through the mission icon.
once you complete the mission with bonus or masters reward, you get 2-3 swords (depending on the campaign). You can view this in the world map. They're easy enough to keep track of.

There is no way to keep track of all the quests you have done though. The only way would be to make a check list using an Excel spreadsheet or something like that using the information on the official wiki. All the quests should be listed in the official wiki though. Also keep in mind that some quests are repeatable, mostly the quests required associated to the various dungeons in Eye of the North.

As mentioned previously, you will be able to see what missions you have completed. Also when the map is zoomed out, the dots representing missions will flash if the main objective hasn't been completed yet.

Damn, do I wish I had a way to track quests still undone on my characters... I want alll of them done on all 10 of my characters, and I think 95% are. But I just can't be sure...

yep, though you may your weapon if you remove them. you also need an expert salvage kit. or you can just add another upgrade and it will get rid of the old one.

they are from any weapons that are in blue text, as soona s you can buy an expert salvage kit you can get them (i think pre-searing is the only area you can't get them from). also runes can be brought from [rune trader]'s in most main towns.

Quote:

all missions (except for the one taking player to post-searing) are fully replayable.
some quests are repeatable (e.g. all primary eye of the north quests) but most quests in the other parts of guild wars can only be completed once per character.

have fun in Guild Wars, don't worry about asking questions! honestly people prefer eager learners to ignorant people who just charge into battle. hope ya have fun ;D!

Cheers everybody, lots of positive energy - nice. Just started conquering the quests in Yaks Bend, and the salvaging of upgrades is happening thick n fast...so yeah allowed my impatience to get ahead of me. But then success has been accelerated somewhat by the enormous generosity shown by a member of a guild I joined, who happily presented me with some upgrade material. In previous games it took a solid year of grinding like an idiot before anyone offered anything...dunno if this is a typical trait of the average pro gw-er, but either way a pleasant surprise it most certainly was. Anyhoo, enjoying the ride so far, sure I'll bump into y'all sooner or later
