Default [Answered] New player looking for advice

I've been playing GW1 for about a month, both for the lore and to build up my HoM. The guild I'm in seems nice, but doesn't really talk to new people much.

While I intend to eventually complete all the campaigns, so far I only have Prophesies and Eye of the North, and got as far as Lion's Arch before going to Eye of the North... where I rapidly hit a brick wall (Finding Gadd.. can't even get to his camp).

I understand that Eye of the North is really for people who have finished at least 1 campaign, but would like to at least unlock a second tapestry so I can make more use of the HoM while playing through the campaigns. Could someone please advise what level, skills and items (from Prophesies) a new and fairly unskilled player would need to have a chance at the EotN content?

And would it be unreasonable to hope to solo Glint's Challange any time soon (for the Fellowship monument)?

The guides I've found seem to either focus on completing the main campaigns 1st, or assume you can get parties / help (which I never can).

My character is an Elementalist, currently level 15 (with ranger as secondary, for now).

Very grateful for any advice offered!

You can dedicate your HoM monuments at any time so I would just leave the Eye of the North for later, at least until you're level 20 and have some elite skills unlocked (like Invoke Lightning, Double Dragon, and Elemental Attunement).

All of the PvE content becomes MUCH easier once you have a party filled with heroes, with decent builds, so I would recommend going to Nightfall to get more heroes (like Olias, Master of Whispers, Norgu, and maybe even Razah) and start buying skills for them, starting with your Necromancers. In Nightfall and EoTN, you can also use Hero Skill Points to unlock skills for your character instead of spending money on a Skill Trainer, so keep that in mind as it is more economical. You don't really to complete Factions or Prophecies, just unlock Kaineng Center and the desert area from Prophecies so that you can buy skills.

Without a good hero team, I assume Glint would be very challenging but I haven't done it in a very long time so I may be mistaken.

This. There is no such thing as 'unlocking' monuments or whatever. It's just a trophy cabinet. You earn stuff by doing content and when you can put it in later. You're not missing out by not having tapestries now. Go back to Prophecies and get better at the game.

PS: He's overlooked the fact you've only got Proph+EotN, so you can pretty much ignore the rest of his post (though if you're serious about GW1 you really should get the other campaigns).

also, keep your eyes open for more helpful guilds (i assume if they're not saying much, they're also not volunteering help much) as doing some missions with henches and without hereos is going to vex you, and i'm sure there are still active, helpful and friendly guilds around, and pve is much more fun with real people

Let me guess, Shards of Orr? If you just want a tapestry, you can buy one pretty cheaply, or earn one from the Norn/Vanguard quest lines, neither of which comes close to Shards difficulty. If you really want to stick with Asura you could also try a running build and suicide run to the portal.

Enough people farm Glint's (or at least, they used to) that it should be faster for you to buy the bro cloths than to earn them yourself.

Thank you all very much for your advice. I'll go back to Prophesies and get more skills for my character and myself!

It was indeed Shards of Orr that caused me problems. After many attempts I could get close to the exit but never through it. I tried another route to Gadd's camp, but had similar problems in a dungeon on that route too. One day I'll go back to them and get through :P

Nightfall is tempting, but I'll progress more in the campaigns I have before buying more.

Finally, I am on the lookout for a more friendly guild, but so far haven't found one that would welcome someone who only plays 4-8 hours a week. I'd not want help (except if it is impossible with 1 player), but conversation and advice would be great.

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer

to start with, the above advise is the best (go play other campaigns before you try eye of the north, you will hit more difficult problems later on).

There is however a trick to finding Gadd when it comes to shards of Orr. There are three problem groups in there.

The first two are very near to each other in a small corridor, and the third is a bit more up ahead.

The first two.Flag your party (fully skilled heroes or just bring henchman) to the left, a bit between the two groups. yourself start hugging the right wall and run past them (running skills help but are not needed), you might hit some agro, but your heroes are taking most of the agro by tanking them. Make sure you time this right, cause your heroes won't survive long and when they are dead your window of opportunity is gone. Make sure you unlock the resshrine at the end of the corridor.

The second group can be avoided by again hugging the right hand wall and wating for them to move the furthest away. It is however very hard. If you fail you and your hero/henchman will respawn at the shrine behind the first two groups. for the final hroup just move in with your party and while the heroes/henchmen distract them you jsut run passed them and you have a clear way to the portal (near the portal is a small group but they can be avoided easily)
