Default Best way to reach level 10 in pre-searing, solo

Since the new pre-searing dailies apparently require you be level 10, what's the optimum way to get there without relying on other players for Northland access?

I'm counting "best" as meaning not mapping out of Charr at the Gate a thousand times, if that can be avoided.

I see the wiki says not to accept any quest rewards after War Preparations and <Your profession> Test, but how early can you stop grinding mobs to be able to use quest XP to reach level 10?

Just accept all quest rewards. The new quests give a lot of xp anyways. Arround 1k xp lol.

You need to get to L10 to be eligible for new quests, and my doing 100% of the quests with my previous pre-searing character only got me to L7.
Since the higher a level is the harder it is to find foes worth XP, I want to farm just enough for the quests to get me to 10.

Charr at the gate quest - Get it, do it, abandon it. Repeat as neccessary. If that's not available, hit The Northlands and have fun.

This. I know you specified 'not that', but other quests, assuming you are going for level 20, are better left turning in at latter levels

You dont actually have to abandon the char quest if you never activate rurik, just never exit the main ascalon portal.

Take the quest in ascalon, map to ashford abbey, go to north to the gate from the south(it doesn't really matter if you aproach around the cliff in front of it from the east or west), but stay well away from the ascalon gate(where rurik is). BTW the rouge bull(level 5) is near there, as well as a red iris spawn so look out for that too.

Then you kill those charr(and the bull if you want and pick the flower if you see it), go to the green hills portal to the west, zone in and out, then go back to the gate, repeat till bored or level 11. Since rurik is never triggered you get endless spawns of level 4-5 charr to slaughter in a convenient location. Their positioning also makes it easy to hide behind the cliff face, so you can nuke them while a pet, the fire imp summon or minions tank for you.

If you do go out the ascalon main gate, you'll have to abandon the quest and retake it. I can usually take the charr with a pet tank and the /bonus imp thing at about level 34.

How many of those daily repeatable quests are there to do in one day? Just one?

1) Farm Wizard's Folly or Catacombs or Regent Valley for lvl 0-3 mobs. There are also quests which can help, such as doing "Bandit Raid" over and over (the quest is not completed until you take the chest to Devona), which gives you a bunch of bandits close to Ashford Abbey. Do this until you're level 6.

2) Start doing "Charr at the Gate" until you're about halfway into lvl 8. If you only kill 3 out of 4 Charr per run (you map out so it saves time from abandoning/retaking the quest) you will get 224-240 xp/run during lvl 6 (5000 xp, 20-22 runs) and 160 during lvl 7 (5600 xp, 29-35 runs). If you can stand it, do 5-10 extra runs after you reach 50% past lvl 8, just to make sure you don't fall short during step 3.

You can also do what Hugh Manatee proposes but I suspect that the extra xp is not worth the time lost coming all the way from Ashford Abbey. Heck, abandoning and re-taking the quest is probably faster. Not to mention that it's quite a bit harder to kill those Charr without Rurik's team helping you. Hugh makes it sound very easy but it's not.

3) The quests will give 10-11k xp, so from halfway lvl 8 they will get you to lvl 10 or very close. If you're still a bit short have someone take you North for a couple of runs. Or you can still farm "Charr at the Gate" but it's only 32-48 xp per run.

Remember to do the qualifying quests for all secondary professions!
You can do all this in a few hours, meaning you can get your lvl 10 in a single day.

FWIW, playing Pre normally (doing all the quests while casually exploring around) will get you to level 6-8, which is perfect for moving on to Post and for the post-Searing Ascalon quests. Doing Post missions and secondary quests will see you reach about lvl 16-18 by the time you get to Lion's Arch. When you reach lvl 20 depends on whether you stick to Prophecies and MOX/henchies or "cheat" by taking quests/heroes in Cantha/Elona/EotN.

Read better dude, you only go out there from ashford once, just to get around rurik. Once that's done you can zone in and out of the green hills/lakeside portal nearby to the west to respawn the charr as many times as you want. Each run takes about 1-3 minutes, depending on if you pick the flower/loop around and kill the bull... or fail in killing charr.

And it is extremely easy if you don't suck. Take a pet or use the /bonus imp summon, sic the pet or use a flatbow to pull the char into the imp, run and hide behind the curve of the cliff face, then kill them, prioritizing Warrior>ranger>mesmer>ele>monk>necro. You just hide behind the cliff so none of their shots hit you, and kill them with nukes. If you're warrior, just go in and kick ass, if you're a ranger, you have the pet to tank and use your secondary to nuke.

I started at level 3 or 4, and I'm still survivoring. If you do fail, maybe grind the bears or other level 3 junk till you can pull the CatG trick.

The idea to rezone from Green Hills is good, haven't thought of that.

But.... you're going for the tank first and leaving all the casters for later? At level 3-4? I somehow have a hard time believing that. I probably misunderstood what you were saying.

Hiding behind the cliff (assuming you can pull it off) will only protect you from Charr Stalker arrows and damage from the casters' staffs. Which is good, no question about it.

But the warriors will still find you; and the casters don't need line of sight for their damage spells. You'll still be hit with Bane Signet by monks, Faintheartedness and Life Siphon by necros, Energy Burn by mesmers and Lava Font by ele. Add to this that the monk(s) keep healing their buddies.

And do not forget that keeping out of line of sight also prevents YOU from using arrows if you're a ranger, or flares as an ele etc.

It can be done, it gets easier as you become more skilled, the pet and the imp and the hiding will help, but it's not the piece of cake you describe, that's all I'm saying.

In other news, people have managed to get LDoA in one day (~9 hours gameplay), so if that can be done I think lvl 10 should be doable as well in a shorter time. I'm guessing 3-4 hours.

This worked for me. Got to about level 7 aswell with quests. Then to lvl9 with Charr at the Gate. And then lvl10 in the Northlands. You can also just slay enemies till you are about lvl4 or 5 and then start doing the quests I think.

My pre char is level 9. Enraged to discover that Langmar will not give quests until level 10. Enraged and filled with black thoughts. Hope they fix this. If they don't lots else to do.

They won't "fix" is because its not "broken". Its working exactly as it should do.

I got there mostly by just playing as normal. I didn't do any quests at all and just went around killing stuff and collecting stuff for Nick and armor. Reaching Lvl 8 is quick and easy. Most enemies will give you experience to that point.

At level 8 I spent a lot of time in Wizard's Folly killing the bears and ice elementals and also the Charr at the Gate quest. The quest isn't difficult with a fire imp and I used the Green Hills Portal as well to easily repeat it.

At level 9 I just did all the quests for a quick push to 10.

Necroposting one year later to confirm Hugh Manatee's tactic still work beautifully. Using a fire imp and a monk with a bar like this (OwAC0kXBI53HQRGx39QJ) (breeze, banish, conjure, ether, orison, retribution, SoW, and bane sig), it's fairly easy as long as you pay attention to your life and maintain retribution. Charr wars die pretty quick if you can group them on you and the imp and drop SoW in the middle of them.

I got from 8 to 10 farming the bull and the drake but sure I would advice anyone against that...such a horrible experience!

At lv7, it seriously slowed down so I got some help running the Charr bosses. I didn't keep track of how much xp per run I got, but at lv8 a Charr boss run gave about 18-20% to lv9. At lv9, it's about 15% for a minimal boss-only run, about 23% for bosses plus most charr up to them, and about 30% for the above plus extra. The minimal run saves so little time that it's silly not to go ahead and take the extra time for more exp.

If y'all see a ranger named Bodies Hit Da Floor, treat him nice. He's been a ton of help for someone who hasn't been to Pre- since before Factions.

The way I do it, only accept the first 3 or 4 quest rewards. Then kill, kill, kill, until level 9. Bears, Ice Elementals, and Hulking Elementals, in Wizard's Folly, will get you from 6 to 9 reasonably quick. Then do all the quests, saving your chosen 2nd profession to last. This will put you at level 10+.

The real debate is whether the time difference between accepting quests at lv9 vs accepting quests at lv19 favors doing them earlier or later. I saved mine but I haven't seen good time scales to indicate one over the other.

Having done several LDoAs I'd say the easiest way is to just farm Charr at the Gate. It can be really tedious but getting Legendary Defender of Ascalon is a very grindy title. In my opinion if you want to hit lvl 20 don't accept quest rewards until level 16 which I believe is the hardest level to pass.

EDIT: wow just realized this was a gravedug thread... *sigh*
